Rio, Roubaix and on-bike urination – Sir Bradley Wiggins promotes cycling to a wider audience on Graham Norton New Year show

“The sport’s flourishing – hence why I’m on Graham Norton.”

The British public were treated to a short introduction to the world of professional cycling from none other than Sir Bradley Wiggins this week. Somewhat incongruously plonked at the end of a line of three actors on Graham Norton’s sofa, a smartly-dressed Wiggins delivered a few of his usual one-liners while answering questions about his sport on a special New Year’s Eve show, which will be available until Wednesday via the iPlayer.

After starting off by telling Norton that everything he does with his son revolves around football, not cycling (“Playing in a muddy field pretending to be in Barcelona. I’m pretending to be Jimmy Bullard from Blackburn”), Wiggins unsurprisingly went on to speak about winning the Tour de France.

He reiterated that he didn’t find riding that 2012 Tour a particularly enjoyable experience. “In some ways you just want to get home,” he said of arriving in Paris in the yellow jersey. “When I look back now, it was an incredible experience, but during it I wasn’t overjoyed every day.”

He described leading out Mark Cavendish for the stage win as being his highlight from that final day.

“The biggest moment on the Champs Elysées wasn’t standing on the podium, winning the Tour de France. It was more leading out one of my best friends, in Mark Cavendish, who won the stage.

"Being able to lead him out – which was a childhood dream of mine; to go across the Place de la Concorde in the yellow jersey and lead the world champion onto the Champs Elysées, who then eventually won the stage - that was more of a dream.

"I crossed the line and they said you’ve won the Tour de France and I was like: ‘Oh yeah, I forgot about that. Cheers. Thanks for that. Nice one.’”

Wiggins then spoke about his plans to finish his career at the Rio Olympics. “I did the Sydney Olympics, what was that, 15 years ago? And that was my first Olympic Games, so I always wanted to end it doing the same thing.”

However, he also took the opportunity to tell Norton and his viewers a little about Paris-Roubaix ahead of his final tilt at that race. “It’s pretty painful. You can never have kids again,” he explained, and if his fellow guests – Liam Neeson, Eddie Redmayne and Anna Kendrick – were starting to get a clearer idea of what road cycling entailed, their education continued following a question later in the show.

“Clearly you’re not stopping at cafés to use the facilities. So do you hold it? What happens?” asked Norton. “You just get it out,” answered Wiggins bluntly, before going into greater detail.

“If it’s raining and it’s freezing cold, you do it in your shorts, because it warms your legs up,” he said. By this point, his fellow guests were looking a little taken aback.

At the end of the show, Wiggins revealed that his New Year plans were for ‘a big beano in Margate’. It was perhaps just as well that he was planning an all-boys night out as earlier on, he had referred to his wife, Cath, as ‘a bit of a panel-beater’ having been asked whether it was true that she always carried his bags for him.

“She clean and jerks 200 kilos – she’s a good girl,” he added, affectionately.

Alex has written for more cricket publications than the rest of the road.cc team combined. Despite the apparent evidence of this picture, he doesn't especially like cake.

Personally speaking - and I suspect this applies to many who have posted above - I wasn't blaming or criticising Wiggins for coming across as awkward, I was just stating that he did.

That said, if he is interested in increasing his celeb profile then I'm afraid he really did score an own goal. Still, it could have been worse, Sky could have sent Froome.

I noticed Boris Johnson did that trick where he disappears after his segment. Good pr and enough clout to make such demands.

I heard a comedian (Peter Kay I think it was) recently say that he would never do the Norton show again as it is very difficult to come across well. So it must be almost impossible for a non-showbiz type.

Peter Kay would say that as his act involves crawling all over the set. He couldn't get away with that like he can on Chattyman or Ross. The genius of the format on Norton is you have to sit with the others and be genuinely charming. It is really exposing, which. is why the likes of Lord Sugar and Tom Cruise fall flat on their faces. Cameron Diaz was really flat recently too. Whilst Will Smith and Benedict Cumberbatch sparkle
Wiggo did fine. And his comments about leading out Cav really hit the mark. I knew exactly what he meant; full out sprinting is not as satisfying as 'charging'. This man knows how to build tempo.

I don't think he is going to make it as a tv personality because he's a grumpy bastard..he can't resist a moan about something. He was having a go at that bloke next to him, plus he's starting to look like a hipster dufus.

great bike rider, but terrible TV performance; stick to what you do best. No one forces you to go on the Norton show.

no one forces you to watch the tv programme. Who are you to judge what someone should or shoud not to, that's like Bradley Wiggins telling you to stop cycling because you are shit compared to him.

He's clearly not comfortable in that environment, he was quite nervous. I don't see how anyone can blame him for that.

Should of had Froome dog on as well and Cav to sit in between them. This would have been entertaining. 4

God there's some harsh critics on here.
He rides a bike for a living. He's on with actors and comedians who do this kind of thing all day long.

He does pretty well for a sportsman.

If you thought he was nervous and awkward then i suggest you seek out the BBC Radio Victoria Pendleton podcast where she interviews him (and others).
He speaks articulately and at great length - clearly much more relaxed than on Graham Norton.
Its easy to sit at your computer and slag him off for whatever reason but
a) I'd like to see any of you lot go on Graham Norton and not be nervous when its neither in your nature or in your job description to be confident in front of cameras and audiences and
b) achieve what he has achieved so you get invited on alongside major movie stars. When you get the call please all let us know and ill retract my criticism.

That makes no sense whatsoever. By that logic you're not allowed to have an opinion on anyone who appears on one of these godawful chat shows unless you're on it too.

There's a seat in the House of Commons waiting for you.

He made a nob of himself, you'll get over it in time.

I like Wiggo, I love what he has achieved and I think he is an entertaining speaker.

It wasn't the ideal company for him though, he have been more understood and appreciated with a couple of other sports people and maybe a comedian to keep it light. I see they actually stuck him on the end of the sofa where the comedian usually sits so maybe he was expected to fulfill that role as well.

bear in mind that the vast majority of people who watched it wouldn't know the first thing about cycling.....

Norton a troll?! you have got to be kidding 35

There has been a rise in the unjustified vitriol on this page and the Bono page. Remember guys 'Keep Road.cc Classy'

As for Wiggo, he is quite entertaining and charmingly down to earth, even after a few Skinny Bitches.

He did his wife, cycling, his reputation as a cycling god, and himself no favours WHATSOEVER.
His wife was thinking how to remove his balls, I reckon, from the moment he opened his mouth and mentioned her.
He has no book out, and he did some stuff well 20months ago and he's stuck on the end of the sofa! What was the point?!
Waste of space and time. His agent must really hate him.
Shame Sky can't utilise the resources of a major media empire and coach these guys how to speak in public. Oh hang on. They are a major media empire. More's the pity.

Why does everyone think they should have asked normal cycling questions?

He gets interviewed enough about cycling, I loved hearing how his wife carts his luggage around for him and things you would never get from him on a normal interview

I do think that it as a bit uncomfortable throughout the whole show, however I don't think that it was Brad's fault. I definitely think that Graham could've possibly done a bit more research into things such as Roubaix and everything. Well done to Wiggo though for actually answering the very vague questions he was asked.

He's gone beard crazy. He has to shave it off while he still can.

He needs to lose that beard.

Yes it was all a bit painfully awkward , cycle racing always does come across a bit like blokes mucking about on bikes on general entertainment shows, but Bradley needs to be a bit more of a showman to sell the sport, he was being honest but so negative too, many people watching must of asked themselves ....why race if it you don't enjoy it?

It came across as a bit awkward to me as well - I don't understand why the shows producers invited him on, then then seemingly didn't bother to research any interesting questions for him.

Brad seemed to do his best at turning his responses for the questions he did have into a 3 act play, which... I cannot work out if that was a good thing or not.

I'm a big fan of Wiggo, but I'm afraid I found him a bit awkward and rather dull. He seemed a little out of depth amongst Graham Norton and the other guests. A shame.

I thought this confirmed his 'total cock' status for me.
