Video: Wiggle launches bikes – and riders – off a mountain to see which flies furthest

Online retailer engages in a spot of bike bungee to compare bikes

Here’s something you won’t see in a road.cc bike test (yet) – how far a bike can travel through the air. Wiggle have tried it, though, with four very different models, launching them and their riders off what resembles a ski jump off the side of a mountain in the French Alps.

Fortunately, the riders – carrying weights where necessary to ensure like is being compared with like – are attached to bungee cords, but even so some of the facial expressions in this video of the exercise are priceless as they plummet into the ravine.

Watch to find out which bike and rider flies through the air with the greatest of ease – and road.cc bike reviewers be warned, site editor Tony was last seen, hammer in hand, heading off to the Cheddar Gorge in a van laden with sheets of plywood, planks of wood and coils of super-thick of elastic cord …

The film was shot at the Bun J Ride, just behind the Hotel les Aravis in St-Jean-de-Sixt, Haute-Savoie.

Simon joined road.cc as news editor in 2009 and is now the site’s community editor, acting as a link between the team producing the content and our readers. A law and languages graduate, published translator and former retail analyst, he has reported on issues as diverse as cycling-related court cases, anti-doping investigations, the latest developments in the bike industry and the sport’s biggest races. Now back in London full-time after 15 years living in Oxford and Cambridge, he loves cycling along the Thames but misses having his former riding buddy, Elodie the miniature schnauzer, in the basket in front of him.
