British Hill Climb National Champion Dan Evans shares winning ride on Strava

504w average and 1004w maximum required to win the British Hill Climb National Championship at the weekend

Newly crowned British Hill Climb National Champion Dan Evans has uploaded his winning ride to Strava, revealing the level of intensity required to claim the title. And yes, he bagged the KOM as well.

Welshman Dan Evans conquered the hill climb in South Yorkshire over the weekend just gone, finishing the course in a time of 3:24.2, keeping runner-up Matt Clinton at bay by just 2.3 seconds. Adam Kenway finished third.

The overall stats reveal a 17.4 km/h average speed over the 1.1km course, called Pea Royd Lane HC on Strava. To produce such a fast time required plenty of power, naturally, and an average power output of 504w and max of 1005w certainly shows Dan had the engine to power up the climb faster than anyone else.

The Strava activity page shows how challenging the climb was, with a tight right-hand bend near the bottom and a left turn towards the top. Pacing was key to producing a good time, and Dan showed he timed it to perfection. The elevation gain over the course was 130m.

David worked on the road.cc tech team from 2012-2020. Previously he was editor of Bikemagic.com and before that staff writer at RCUK. He's a seasoned cyclist of all disciplines, from road to mountain biking, touring to cyclo-cross, he only wishes he had time to ride them all. He's mildly competitive, though he'll never admit it, and is a frequent road racer but is too lazy to do really well. He currently resides in the Cotswolds, and you can now find him over on his own YouTube channel David Arthur - Just Ride Bikes

He beat quite a few great riders too.

Hill climbs are mental.

Excellent!

As a slight aside (and apologies if this has already been covered on road.cc), but after reading the above I searched to see how David Millar got on earlier this month on at the Bec CC Hill Climb- results here http://www.cyclingweekly.co.uk/racing/british-racing/david-millar-close-...

Strava ride goes slightly beyond finish line; average power was actually ~543 W. Even better!
