Winning night for road.cc - and our own Mat Brett - at Cycling Media Awards

We get named best website, and our tech editor Mat is named best specialist writer

We'll be rearranging the road.cc trophy cabinet tomorrow to make some more space - we've been named best cycling website in the inaugural Cycling Media Awards in London tonight! And the good news doesn't stop there - tech editor Mat Brett has been named best specialist online writer!

In the cycling website category, sponsored by Tenn Outdoors, we saw off some strong competition from BikeRadar, Cycling News, MPORA, Singletrackworld and Total Women’s Cycling to win the award, which will sit alongside previous ones for Best Consumer Website at the BikeBiz Awards, which we took three years running from 2010-12.

Mat also faced a strong challenge in his category, where he was up against Ben Carlson-Oakes of Sportive.com
BikeRadar's James Huang, Kirsty Ho Fat of Women's Cycling, Marc Basiliere who writes for Bikerumor.com and Singletrackworld.com, BBC London's Tom Edwards and last but definitely not least, road.cc's own Dan Joyce.

The evening also saw a video celebrating the contribution to cycling media of Steve Worland, who died earlier in the year after over 20 years spent reviewing countless bikes and cycle products. Andrew Dodd of Mountain Biking UK magazine won the inaugural Steve Worland Award for Specialist Print Writer.

Mat acknowledged in a short acceptance speech that Steve would have won the Specialist Online Writer award himself had he still been around, and dedicated the award to him.

As ever when we receive recognition of this kind, we'd like to thank each and every one of you, our readers, who are the people who really make this site what it is. Without you, we’re just a bunch of idiots messing around on bikes. Thank you.

Simon joined road.cc as news editor in 2009 and is now the site’s community editor, acting as a link between the team producing the content and our readers. A law and languages graduate, published translator and former retail analyst, he has reported on issues as diverse as cycling-related court cases, anti-doping investigations, the latest developments in the bike industry and the sport’s biggest races. Now back in London full-time after 15 years living in Oxford and Cambridge, he loves cycling along the Thames but misses having his former riding buddy, Elodie the miniature schnauzer, in the basket in front of him.

Well done all, it's a truly excellent site that I enjoy on a many-times-a-day basis!

We are going for the "best pink and black themed website for a cycling club in Oxford" award.. it's a tough category though...
