Britain's top rider: road.cc poll update

Roadies lay down an early lead as Wiggins gets left behind

This weeks poll to find Britain's top cyclist in 2008 may have moved down the page a bit, but it hasn't get any less exciting.

It's neck and neck at the moment with roadies Nicole Cooke and Mark Cavendish slugging it out for the lead - as things stand they are both tied on 37 per cent of the vote.

Cooke made a typically aggressive early break establishing a commanding lead over the chasing pack but as the day wore on Cavendish managed to bridge across and by last night he had made a break for the line. But Nicole Cooke is nothing if not tenacious (and her fans seem to get up early) because during the early hours she made up the ground and now the two road riders are neck and neck.

The burst by the two roadies has shattered the chasing pack, big man Chris Hoy is out on his own in third place and possibly biding his time - the poll does have a week to go after all. Waiting to give it a big push on the final lap may be Pendleton's tactic too… but on six per cent of the vote, she'd better hurry up.

And Bradley? At the moment he's registering one vote (and we gave him that) and he may already have decided to chuck this in for a lark and head off down the pub - that's obviously where his fans are already. Come on people he is a double Olympic gold medalist and he's won gold at two Olympics running - surely he deserves better than this.

The polls are open for the rest of the week so vote early and vote often! (Surely some mistake there – ed).
