IAM’s Matthias Brandle clinched victory on Thursday’s stage 5 of the Tour of Britain, a tough hilly 180km stage from Exmouth to Exeter including the summit of Haytor climb on Dartmoor.

That victory came from a four-man breakaway that got away early in the stage, thrilling the crowds but producing no change in the overall classification - Omega Pharma - Quick-Step’s Michal Kwiatkowski still retains the lead by a slender margin.

The young Michal Kwiatkowski is an active user of Strava and he has been uploading each stage to the social network, offering us an inside glimpse at just what is involved in racing at this level. The numbers on today’s stage make for some impressive reading.

The stage was 183.9km long, as recorded by his Garmin, and carried out at an average speed of 37.9kph, producing a ride time of 4hrs 51mins. He’s also shared his power data, but if perhaps the 223w average power output doesn’t tell the whole story, but the 1,071w max power output provides a bit more colour to the demands of the stage.

Sadly for local riders, he bagged a few KOMs along the way, including Up York Road, darts farm blast, The view over John Lewis and Crank it Bitch 2!. They’ll take some effort to tumble. Are you a local rider who has just been bumped off the top? Let us know in the comments below.

Not a local, but Devon born and bred. Rode Exeter to Haytor then followed behind to the finish - a long way behind. Took an hour longer to ride 10 miles less distance. Lovely ride in perfect conditions. Wonder how many of the pros were wishing for that 28T

Comparing my side-by-side data with Kwiatkowski's (or Terpstra's, Blyth's or any of the others that use Strava) makes for pretty depressing reading!

You think these are impressive? Check out his stage 3 data and the Tumble kom.....No mere mortals are getting close to that ...ever!

Impressive given that it looked on the highlights that it was very much a day off for most of the peloton. Comparing their speeds to those riders at the Vuelta, the highlights of which preceded the ToB on ITV4, was striking. It didn't even look the same sport. But that says more about big boys' 'preparation' for the Vuelta than anyone at ToB.

Mr K is certainly a classy rider though and has had this one in the bag since his win in Bristol.

I'm a Local rider, but he didn't even come close to any of my KOMs!

And when I say he didn't 'come close', I mean, he didn't ride anywhere near anywhere where I've set a KOM.

As for the segments he did ride, I'll just have to find some way to get over the fact I'm now 1031st or whatever rather then 1030th (sob!)
