Invention could end UK cycle parking shortage

Cyclehoop turns any post into a secure bike rack

Had your bike nicked recently? We hope not. But we bet you know someone who has…

Now a UK inventor has floated a way of hopefully beating the thieves – the Cyclehoop.

It’s aimed at helping riders who lock their steed to a lamppost, only to later find the whole thing has been lifted off and away by some enterprising criminal.

And it means almost any upright pole can be turned into an instant bike stand. Roadsigns, lampposts, bollards, bus stops and even traffic lights could all become safe places to lock up, the inventor Tony Lau says.

The device is a simple hoop which can be bolted onto to any post, with no need to dig up the road.

Lau, 27, has already persuaded the London boroughs of Islington and Southwark to install Cyclehoops. If they’re a hit no doubt more will follow.

UK cycling charity Life Cycle UK, which helps two wheeled commuters plan their journeys, said:  “We think it’s a great idea.

“Many people already lock their bikes to traffic signs – but are gobsmacked to discover that thieves have simply lifted their bike and its lock up and over the top of the pole.  The Cyclehoop would prevent this happening.”

Lau came up with the idea after his own bike was stolen by being lifted off a traffic sign.

He told the Guardian "I had many ideas, but in the end it all boiled down to two simple hoops. They seemed to work best because they are quick and easy to install, while very secure."

Lau also recently won joint first prize in a competition to design an indoor bike shed for Google’s New York office. Later this year he’ll attend talks with Google and New York City Council to discuss his concept, which stores bikes in racks suspended from ceilings.

I can't see the fixing to well but they look like they could be undone, if thats the case and providing the bike was locked to the hoop as opposed to the upright of the hoop design then a thief could simply undo it with a ratchet and make off with cycle and hoop attached.

Apart from that it's a good idea and would help prevent your bike from falling over.

but there's plenty of ways of securing a bolt fixing. even with a basic Allen bolt it's pretty much just a case of bashing a ball bearing into the hexagonal hole...

I'm guessing they'd be a security screw or bolt of some description though.

Hi there, the Cylehoops use shear nuts or break off nuts. When installing, you tighten the nut until the end snaps off, after which the nut cannot be removed. Shear nuts are commonly used for securing street furniture - Hope that answers your query.

...that leave a conical metal sleeve when the nut snaps off? i've got them on my shed shackle.

Yes the are the same nuts. Is this the Shed Shackle by Pragmasis? It's a great idea.

it's only a great idea until you want to move house though. mine's still in the shed at my old house, seeing as how you need to rather inconveniently remove an entire wall of the shed and destroy it in order to get the frickin' thing off... 1
