Seat height - sore hip :(

I've moved my saddle height and now I have an achy right hip after about 2 hours. Does anybody have any foolproof saddle height calculations that take crank length into account. All the formula I can find don't seem to factor in crank length, surely they make quite a difference?

The answer is no, i dont have a fool proof calculator but lets start with inside leg and crank lengths. What is your inside leg measurement and what length cranks are you using?

no formula will take into account your hip flexibility, and very few if any will take into account your shoe size, cleat position, fore-aft seat adjustment etc. why not move the seat back where it was comfortable?

With seat height and crank length I tend to err on the side of lower than too high/long. 175 cranks hurt my knees. I have a 78cm inseam. I ride a 170 on my commuter and a 172 on my trainer. Both are Sram compacts.

I had a professional bike fit done a couple of weeks ago and ended up with the following measurement 84cm inside leg with 172.5 cranks-

Saddle Height (centre of bottom bracket-top of saddle) 80cm
Saddle Set Back (nose of saddle behind centre of bottom bracket) 6.5cm

The guy spent a fair bit of time looking at saddle fore/aft positioning and cleat positioning. It's only been a couple of weeks since getting the fit done, but it was well worth feel much more comfortable on the bike now.

I would be inclined to say that 175mm cranks are a bit long for your inside leg, any chance of borrowing some 170 ones off a mate to try?

A good rule of thumb is from the platform of the pedal to the top of your saddle measured with the crank in line with the seat tube (ie maximum extension) should be 110% of your inside leg measurement. This accounts for crank length but not very thick soles on shoes
