Ayrshire to Dundee

I'm planning a ride going from Kilmarnock to Dundee later in the year. Anybody got any suggestions on routes to take and areas to steer clear of?

Nope, just checked, this is the one, although the previous route would be nice too!

I find most of the back roads in Renfrewshire to be pretty cycle friendly, probably because there's a fair few cyclists on the roads. Alternatively you can trust the cycle network which is pretty good. Personally, I would probably use route 7 to get to Bridge of Weir, go through Houston, Bishopton, across the Erskine Bridge to Milngavie then on from there. I'll check if I created the rest of the route on mapmyride and post it if I did.

GKam, unfortunately I live in Kilmarnock, and the wife's parents live in Dundee, so avoiding them will be hard 20

Macluskie, that looks like a good route, although I was wanting to try and avoid going through Glasgow City Centre.

FMOAB, I had looked at going through renfrewshire as I often cycle to Barrhead and know the area reasonably well. What roads did you use?

Gman59c, do you want the most direct route, or a more scenic route. I planned a 200k audax from Renfrewhire to St Andrews last year that I think worked pretty well. Over the Erskine Bridge up to Aberfoyle, Callander, along Loch Lubnaig, Loch Earn, on to Comrie, Perth, Newburgh, Newport at which point you could cross over to Dundee.

From Ayrshire to Renfrewshire, I would generally stick on national route 7, it's generally pretty direct and quiet.
