UK pro cycling

Hi,
First time post as I'm a n00b to cycling and havn't been able to find anything about it on the internet.
It's a very broad question....!

Basically, I'm wondering how pro cycling works at a domestic level.
I get the World Tour/Pro Tour thing, but I can't find anything on how pro cycling works in the UK. What UK pro teams are out there and what do teams have to do to progress through the ranks etc.
Any pointers would be much appreciated.
Thanks.

The big series is called the Premier Calendar, and although it has been heavily reduced for 2013, it still represents the highest tier of racing for the domestic teams:

Tour of the Reservoir 2 Day
University of Lincoln GP
Beaumont Trophy
Stockton Velo 29 Grand Prix
Grand Prix of Wales
Ryedale GP

These are contested by teams like:

Rapha Condor (or whatever they're called next year)
Endura
Node-4
IG Sigma Specialized
Raleigh
UK Youth
Cycle Premier

And a few other ones, although those ones seem to get the most wins.

The Tour Of Britain is a little different, in that ProTour teams can ride if they want to (eg. SKY), alongside the domestic teams.

Probably the best domestic riders in 2012 that you may have heard of were:

Russel Downing
Dean Downing
Jonathan Tiernan Locke
Yanto Barker
Magnus Backstedt
Graham Briggs
Russel Hampton

The National RR Championships are open to all Elite cat. riders, and the current one is SKY's Ian Stannard.

The National TT champs are, I think, by invite, and the current one is SKY's Alex Dowsett.

I hope that gives you a little bit of useful information, and I hope I've got it all right!
