Knew there was a reason I keep an extra Zip Vit gel in my saddle bag! Just a shame they taste like wallpaper paste!!

Or simply carry a section of an old tyre with the bead removed. That way, because you have it, you know you'll never need it.
Once used a Tesco Clubcard to repair sidewall damage!

I've changed my inner tube, pumped up the tyre to high pressure and carried on using my outer tyre in the past. Surely you'd need to have a hell of a slash in the tyre for it to fail whilst pedalling home?
Quite often you can find that even a 1cm cut in a tyre's side wall can cause a blow out once you get as far as about 60psi. Usually in the tread of the tyre you can get away with it as there's a bit more material (unless you love skidding about on a fixie).
A fiver also does the trick. Though depends if the damage is pre or post coffee stop
