Time trial world champion Tony Martin, one of Bradley Wiggins' main rivals for Olympic gold, has pulled out of the Tour de France in order to let a broken wrist heal in time for London 2012.

No surprise to be honest, If I had a broken wrist I'd be jumping off aswell, Unless my team needed me, with none of his team showing anything, then I think its the right choice and I wonder if Canc will follow suit?

I think Cancellara is still WAY too important to RSN's team standings for him to be allowed to leave. Plus there's still that later ITT, which he could win or at least get another top 5.

Martin has too little to gain and too much to lose--time to get some rest and try for a reboot in a few weeks. To be honest, he didn't impress me too much earlier in the year (especially compared to 2011), but his more recent ITTs appear to have been foiled by bad luck and not necessarily lack of form. He should still be considered a top contender in London.

Yeah between his wrist and a puncture, that put pay to yesterday's TT.

I don't think Canc has anything to do with RSNT's team standing's anymore, he's quite a bit down on GC, he'll just be a DS the rest until the ITT on the second last day. But even then, the tour will have been decided. The ITT isn't going to change much going on yesterday's performance, So whats the point in hanging about for over a week and using more energy when you can be off preparing for London? Thinking

Good point. I think Fabbo could finish the TdF and still be in good form for the Olympics, but when you factor in risk of crash injuries... hmm... it's a tough call. Thinking

I could understand him carrying on if RSNT had someone like Cav in their team and Canc would do a job like Eisel and shepherd him through the mountains. But I don't see anyone needing that kind of help, So one stage that he "might" win, Isn't really worth a weeks energy lost/gained over rivals Wink

Spartacus has already stated that should his mrs go into labour he will leave the tour.

Mind you on current form i cant see Martin doing much in London though as Wiggo, Froome and Canc will all be there but it depends on how the rest of the tour pans out for Froome and Wiggo.

There are no stupid questions, just stupid people.
