The 'burns' disrupt the turbulent air moving across his face in the same way the aerofoil's and fin's on an F1 car work. They're actually improving his aerodynamics.

I cannot resist commenting on this.....SideBurn's are definately the thing to have! If he loses the Tour by 1 second because of them they will be worth it!

Something I noticed on the highlights last night.
Wiggo's sideburns have been thinned down a bit where his glasses are.

I wonder if he gets some rubbing from them and has had to thinned them out a bit or realised they leave his glasses poking out a bit so not as aero .
