Jumping can actually make life for everyone (including the cyclist) safer especially when turning left. Risk £40 or get squashed by a lorry ...  39

Agreed. Plus there's a difference between jumping a red at a pedestrian crossing when there's clearly nothing coming, and going straight over a crossroads blind. Here in Cambridge they are talking about giving CSOs the authority to spot-fine cyclists for jumping red lights, but it would just be too easy for them to abuse it.
