What a great text from the wife

While out riding today I pass the wife driving the kids and their cousins to swimming.

As the roads were bad (wet) I had on my cheap kit. Karrimor tights and shorts over them (a tenner the lot from sports direct) and a crane (lidl or aldi I don't recall which) jacket.

I stopped for a drink and read my text which said, in part, your cycling kit looked cheap and nasty why not buy yourself some proper kit. Get what you like.

I replied that it was old kit. She then says, seeing as its soon to be our anniversary why not get good kit and a new bike and keep old kit/allez for winter, etc seeing as I had got the bike nearly 2 yrs ago now.

She even said she is prepared to give road riding a go herself and will borrow our son's TDF next time I go out.

Had to share that.

What exactly is "swimming"? Is that that strange activity which triathletes take part in and is prone to ruin a good bike ride?

I think it was latest or recent cycling active. Either ultegra on roubaix or a Scott that the comment was made.

It was a borrowed mag so didn't make a proper note tbh.

Anyone here got a Venge or ridden one btw?

don't think I've ever seen a negative report for Shimano groupset stuff, TBH. At the end of the day it's just evolutionary - (unless you go Di2) there's nothing revolutionary about them, 2012 mechanical Ultegra will be very well sorted.

Cannondale Synapse Ultegra!

I have 2012 105 on my allez and 2012 ultegra on my shiny new cannondale. The ultegra is definitely a step up in quality and I'm very pleased with it.

Aren't they like £6k ?!

Not got that kind of budget.

My humble aiming would be Spesh Tarmac Elite v Pinarello FP due
Or
Budget buster choice between Pinarello FP quattro v Spesh Venge Expert.

So either 105 or Ultegra.

Anyone know if the 2012 ultegra is ok? I read one negative report.

Also to answer my own question, pinarello warranty is 3 years.

The Spesh and Van Nic have lifetime frame warranty.

Any idea what the Pinarello warranty is on the frame?

Two years!! My NEW bike is 9 years old. (The old one dates from 1974).
Replace it when it wears out, I say!

Think I will do just that tbh.

Plus I am at the Road Cycling Show on saturday which says it will have a few demo bikes.

The bikes I 'like' are the Spesh Tarmac Elite and the Pinarello FP Due 105 or perhaps even push to FP Quattro Ultegra.

To add to this, given the positive comments on here recently and a long time interest in Ti then I guess the Van Nic chinook needs to be in the mix too.

What's your budget? I'd be inclined to book a day off work, make a couple of calls to local bike shops and set up a raft of test rides. Comparisons of steel, Ti, carbon, high end Alu for a start.

The question is which bike. I love my allez so tempted with a tarmac. But then there is the call of a pinarello.

Congrats Super Domestique on your anniversary. Obviously the latin in your good wife can't bear to see nasty kit - health to wear and may their be many more years.

And I didn't even mention she is latin!

Although she knows I am also cool with her shoe and handbag collections.

That's a stroke of luck - something tells me those collections might be expanding shortly 3 Certainly would be the case with Mrs Biggins
