in the summer the base layer is given a miss

IIRC the base layer is meant to be against your skin to draw away the sweat and stop you getting a chill. If it was over your bibs then it wouldn't do it as effectivly apart from the chest and back area where the bib doesn't cover.

Under, close fitting next to the skin. your trying to reduce air flow (draughts) to improve insolation (at least in winter).

I wear a base layer, then bib tights, then another base layer, then a t shirt, then a cycling jersey, then a wind jacket.

Makes me look fat.

Warm and fat.

Nah, in the summer its all about a sleeveless skinsuit (Cool, I know. Some would call it a Triathlon Skinsuit, but you know, #42 and all that), Shoes with no socks and my summer helmet. 4 4 4

Frankly, the sock rules are ridiculous, but Im glad to see that the Keepers of the Cog are out in force this afternoon.

Up in the arctic circle we have 1 rule in the winter:

Wool should be the closest thing to your skin 26

There's no point wearing a base layer over cutton/lycra as it basically looses its heat keeping capabilities over normal cotton.

So if your base layer is wool, it should always be under. Then if it/you get wet it will still be warm.

Thats my tip of the day!

Not wishing to hijack the thread as loosley connected. I see alot of riders with socks over tights, faux pas or not???

If you're wearing tights, its neoprene.

Shorts and 3/4 legnth Belgian Socks.

The #84 of the rules has been made 4 4 4

The only socks that should go over tights are shoe socks. When in socks and shorts the socks should be at bottom of calf 1
