Let cyclists ride on footpaths

I think cyclists should be permitted to ride on ALL footpaths.

Why? In many areas of the UK:

1) most roads are dangerous for cyclists and put people off cycling

2) so few people walk nowadays most footpaths are under used

3) police people need new guidance to accept and even encourage cycling on footpaths.

Just to clarify do you mean footpaths in the legal sense or pavements? I thought the latter were statistically actually more dangerous than the roads

didn't we nearly win that right in the countryside act of 1968, and it was thrown out at the last minute?

or maybe i've got that all wrong 1

there's mileage in what you say but there's an awful lot of footpaths that aren't fit for cycling...
