Fantasy Cycling wish list

by dave_atkinson on January 19, 2012 - 16:06

Okay, so we've reached the point where we've nearly built all the bits of the 2012 Fantasy Cycling game, only three days after it started. There's still a few things to do on the, erm, to-do list and these are they:

1) rider form graphs and stage points on their pop-up profiles (plus headshots of everyone)
2) tabs in user leagues for the different competitions
3) invite box to invite a friend
4) system emails with stage updates and previews
5) mobile version of site

all of this is scheduled to be ready for the Paris-Nice.

is there any other functionality you'd like to see? if so, comment below. we won't guarantee that we'll build it but we do try and make the game as playable and friendly as possible.

please note: this is not the place to discuss possible rule/scoring changes, as there won't be any rule/scoring changes. the rules are set for the season.

cheers!

Can we change the rules / points scoring system please... Surprise

Could we have an option to make transfers in advance.

For example i would enter what transfers i want for Sunday's stage today and then the system would automatically make those transfers (providing i have enough credits) on Saturday.

This would help make it fairer for people who are not able to log on every single day.

I'm pretty sure when your searching for transfers you can put in the "search values below" or when you bring up the riders for the next stage it shows "add" if you can afford them. If not then you cant add them to your team.

Hopefully this is one of the more simple requests - A latest stage score column to be added to all leagues between total score and positions changed.

I'm aware you can access this by clicking into the overall score for a total breakdown, but this would be really interesting to see at first-glance.

Quite agree Gkam84!!!

Look at the TDU site if you want to know all that info. I've got a set of about 6/7 tabs with quick access to different sections of that site and a few others.

The fun of it is doing the research, (although I still want those wheels). I especially like doing it in French and Spanish.

A more relevant point to the actual forum though is;

can we know the total amount of points different riders have scored for our team up to that point?

It's not really that important but would be fun to know. I'm sure Boassen Hagen is top of my team but who is 2nd or 3rd. Without some tedious calculating I don't know.

Maybe the rider who gets the most points in the Fantasy league overall could win the roadcc TDU Fantasy shirt prize. Perhaps Dave could give it to him in person!

you've always been able to sort the riders by form, so nothing much has really changed. it's just a bit more accessible. one of the main reasons for the redesign was to make the game easier to play. and form wasn't much help picking valverde Thinking

dave_atkinson's picture

posted by dave_atkinson [4766 posts] 21st January 2012 - 18:32

I know you've always been able to sort it by form, but having an all be it small F beside there name makes it easier to spot, Its not really a factor towards the start of a race but as we get into the final week of a grand tour, people who don't research will just pick the guys who have a D and F beside there name, knowing they will get some safe points

Because as a grand tour goes on, the "form" riders are going to be those highest up in the GC, Points and Mountains, because in this game they are scoring points every day

Gkam84's picture

posted by Gkam84 [3278 posts] 21st January 2012 - 18:46

I think the form indicators are of less value given the increased points available for stage finishes this time round. Yes you can grow safe points just using them but that will never replace good planning, knowledge of riders and taking a punt on the stage results.

Additionally it makes it more accessible to new or less experienced players, and in my book anything that gets people more involved with the sport is a good thing (as well as increasing traffic, dwell time and site loyalty!).

Downhill bikes don't make you cool.

I really do not see how a 'current' leaders jersey takes away from research. As we all know somebody could have 'form' yet totally stuff up on a stage, get caught behind a crash. Having a gentle reminder on who is wearing what jersey is helpful. I work earlies and am in my bed 8pm. I do not have time to go trawling the internet to see if cav is wearing yellow going into the mountains on le tour. To call up the rider profile and see that a rider is still holding the leaders/point/kom or whatever jersey would be useful. It does not necessarily mean that I am choosing a rider soley based on what jersey he is wearing..

It doesn't take that much to bookmark a few of the key pages on the official tour site; results, stage profiles etc, put them in a folder and open with one click. That gives you quick access to all the key info. Quicker than using the info on the fantasy site.

After that you'll need to do some research if you want to be even in the top 50, let alone win.

you're hardly bottom of the pile. you're top half, after all

if you're playing any kind of game like this then putting in the time to find out who's doing what is always going to benefit you in the long run. if you don't have the time/means to do that as much as the next player then you'll be at a disadvantage whether the jerseys are shown on the fantasy game or not.

not saying it's not a worthwhile idea, just that it won't result in a level playing field.

For points behind, I would just look under `User~Automatic Leagues' & pick League name to see where you are

I think I've mentioned this before, or someone had suggested it before, but, I was wondering if you could add a column to the Stage scores pages. Right now they show your score that particular day for the stage run that day.

I was wondering if you could add a column that let you know your standing in the overall competition that day. For example I might have scored 106 points in yesterday's stage and, if we had it, the column next to it would tell me I was 46th in the overall competition that day.

Thanks! Smile

This might end up being very longwinded for someone to sort but i think the credit ratings of some riders are a bit out between ds and specialist riders. Already mentioned i know.

for instance you have Sandy Casar (a ds) who is more expensive than some sprinters or km's.

perhaps a screen created towards the end of the season for people to put their opinions on riders value on might be helpfull for the powers that be to value the riders for next year.

Such as Ben Swift - classed as a sprinter but is much more expensive than the likes of Guardini or Kristoff who are both v good sprinters.

This keeps coming up and the problem is that for some races the likes of Swift and Appolonio will be the lead sprinter for Sky and will be worth 20-25 credits each whereas Casar will always be what he is, a breakaway specialist DS.

It's impossible to plan the rider values out from the start to fit every race, or even every stage of every race, if Swift had ridden the Giro he may have been the preferred sprinter on SKY for 1 or 2 stages and with an excellent lead out 18.4 credits would have been a steal. Likewise Basso who was in poor form is cheap at 28 and Gilbert who's been crap is expensive at 40, there's no way to predict how each rider will do or what role they'll play throughout the season at the start of January.

The key to the game has always been finding value, especially with DSs, and having had breakout seasons the likes of Guardini, Kristoff and Gavazzi will no doubt be stars and considerably more expensive next year. However new DSs will come up and replace them as great value sprinters/climbers.

Unless you're happy for rider values to be set per race there really isn't much that can be done about it.

I agree - the only fair way is to just pick which algorithm you're going to use and stick to it. I don't know how they decided the values for this season - but for next year presumably some kind of system that accounts for world ranking and points scored in the game for the previous 2 seasons (average points per day's racing or whatever). Some guys would come out a bit overpriced, and some would come out as bargains - depending on the race - thats just the fun of it.

I think its a fantastic game - the only thing I'd consider changing is how its decided which riders are DS and which are stars. Personally I'd prefer slightly less stars (eg max 6 per team) and the option of choosing either 3 or 4 in your team rather than the enforced 4, but maybe thats over-complicating things?

Removing the cap would be good so you can have 3 stars, or 5 stars or whatever, for some races (ToC, the classics) I had plenty of budget left and would have loved some cheap stars but the restriction makes the game interesting and I'd be happy for it to stay.

I would love an easier way to see how my riders just scored. Having to click back to the stage scores and search for my riders just seems clumsy. I think it would be super helpful to have more useful information when you click on riders, such as specific stage results, rather than just a trend line of scores. A trend line isn't super helpful when stages differ so drastically.

I hate having to type my password and username every time I go to the game, especially on iPad/iPhone.

Is it possible to set a cookie to remember that the user is logged in?

This might be a setting issue on your iphone/ipad as on my android phone it always remembers my password/username and keeps me logged in unless I clear my history/cache.
