Sitting astride the Yamaha YZF-R1 superbike on the 1850-metre summit of Alpe d'Huez high in the French Alps with the bike's engine burbling at tickover in the crisp alpine air, the mountain lies before me. Daunting doesn't even come close. Ahead is a 13.5-kilometre plunge into the valley below.
