People have pointed out "Cav is shite going uphill".
Well i tell you what he could still go up quicker than anyone on this forum !
Typical Brits already finding fault
Well done mate, you have done the country proud
Agreed, Cav is a great cyclist and sportsman, can you imagine Usain Bolt running for five hours then being able to sprint at full pace uphill for the final 500m? Bolt doesn't even run 500m! A great achievement and my votes for SPOTY and team of the year will definitely be for Cav and GB.
yes this was a huge team effort for which they all deserve a medal Cav rode for 5.40 minutes at an ave 29.2 mph he is a true great sportsman and he still had to deliver at the end. well done I for one was on the edge of my seat cheering him on.
If you saw the interview you would have heard/saw that Cav was very grateful for the support/effort from the other guys in the team and also those who participated in races leading up to the Worlds - he has always praised the teams efforts (G.B or H.T.C)
Gotta be the best team sporting effort this year
Well done sir on becoming world champion. Not forgetting the work his team mates put in to get him there either. "I was on the end of my seat ffs"
Spot on Arrier.
It's sad how a forum thread can go from 'best sporting moment ever' to questioning Cav's weakness climbing!
In a sport where egos needs careful management, to get 8 fellow professionals to bury themselves for you says all you need to know about Mark Cavendish.
Just enjoy the fact GB has a new World Champion FFS.
"..but he is so shite going up hill."
I'll put my money on Cavendish against you uphill anyday !
Thats true Tony, to me Mark Beaumont is a great cyclist, but he won't be appearing on any lists
What he is fantastic at is winning… you don't get too many of people like that in any sport and Brits that know how to win are rarer still.
Yes he's a specialist but then there have been plenty of great climbers who couldn't sprint for toffee and quite a few of them were shite descenders too… nobody qubbles about them being great cyclists - you do what you can do best. There is probably a distinction though between being a great cyclist and being a great bike rider.
He's not a great cyclist, he's a fantastic sprinter, end of, nothing else, So many better bikers out there, but no-one better at the sprints
@gkam Then this must go equally for the great climbers. TTers, puncheurs etc. The sport is so specialised now that you don't get any one person dominating in all fields. According to your logic there are no great cyclists left.
Cav can sprint but he is so shite going up hill that I wonder whether he can ever be described as a great cyclist.
That's like saying Pele was a great forward but he was crap in goal so can never really be described as a great footballer. Until you get the fact that there are 'positions' in cycling you'll remain confused by this.
Yeah its pretty crap to be honest didds
Also, i'm hating the way this thread is titled, because he only won thanks to his team
If all the rest of the riders hadn't ridden in the likes of the Giro, TdF and Vuelta, none would have qualified and there is no chance without team mates he would have won today
I'm still new to this so seaking advice/explanations...
I still can;t quite get what's in it for the other team members, glad though I am for team GB etc.
Especially aside from the kudos, pros are effectively riding for a competing pro team's rider where next season the winner's team gets various benefits from his holding the rainbow. Tho its possible of course THIS time around that cav will possibly end up on team GB/Sky - we'll wait and see.
same goes in some ways for the Olympic medals... riders qualify for the Olympics to in effect be told that they will not be winning a medal but helping someone else get one.
didds
The best sporting moment ever!
