Petition for Driver Awareness

by downfader   August 20, 2011

Hello there. I rarely frequent these forums so sorry for the "spam", but I wonder if any of you would consider signing a petition I have set up:

http://epetitions.direct.gov.uk/petitions/13266

I had to split the agenda between the title and the dialogue box due to space, so I hope it gets across that I mean both teaching new drivers to look out for cyclists - how to drive safely around them, and also implicate some form of testing on this.

If you agree then please sign, tweet, facebook, blog etc! I have also set up a second on making cyclelanes work (where they are provided and may actually be beneficial ideally http://epetitions.direct.gov.uk/petitions/3531 )

Thank you kindly for your time! Nerd

I saw there was one about introducing the Strict Liability rule in the UK but whichever doughnut set it up also wrote that he wanted stronger penalties for bad cycling.

I put this one up a week ago, have hit the heady heights of 11 votes...!

As part of my job I used to try to incorporate cycle facilities into new road layouts. The guidelines are so out of date to be practically useless - until cycling numbers reach "critical mass" and cycling becomes the number one priority for local authorities we might be banging our heads against the wall. But, we can keep trying! Good luck.

I saw that. Havent signed yet. I think with cycling in those circumstances it needs the caveat said before hand: "this is not a stepping stone, this is to give you empathy to other road users." I also expect those with balance issues (eg the disabled) would be exempt. Smile

I avoided signing that tbh. I really do want strict liability on insurance to be law, but I do think that petitions have a higher chance of signature with single issues (that has 2), and as you infered: do we really need higher penalties for bad cycling? My understanding is that there are plenty of laws, £thousands that can be fined and even years that one can be put in prison for offences.

We after all, rarely see motorists get jail or heavy fines/bans for killing and maiming others (whether they be cyclist, pedestrian or motorist) Thinking
