tough break - literally - on the setavento. sorry to hear about that. good article though. i've been riding my genesis equilibrium as an audax bike (kind of...) and can vouch for steel, or at least that particular steel, over what i'd term long distances 
I've ridden a fair few carbon bikes and i don't think i'd choose one as a super-long-distance machine. but that's me.
