Is it possible to dismantle a front derailleur?

Hi,

Is it possible to dismantle a front derailleur?

I dismantled, cleaned and regreased my caliper brakes yesterday. I now how the bug to dismantle as much of my bike as possible and doing the same.

I've tried Googling this but i can't seem to find any website that states whether it's possible.

Thanks

What exactly are you trying to get at to clean? Everything is accessible with the front mech in one piece; you don't even need to remove it from the bike.

I think a better question than "Is it possible to dismantle a front derailleur?" is "How easy is it to put a front derailleaur back together after I dismantled it...?"

Don't dismantle the front mech. No point really.

You can dismantle the rear mech - taking off the jockey wheels is very easy. Do that to get your kicks and maybe change the jockey wheels if you like.  I don't think I'd go further than that though as I doubt you'd get it back together again.

Have you thought of buying a jigsaw ?

I don't think taking powertools to it is a wise idea

There's not much dismantling you can do to a front mech. I'd recommend leaving it alone as they can be tricky to position correctly once you've taken it off (and then realised there's nothing else to do to it).

I agree with Duncann and VeloUSA

Anything is dismantable but it's the reasssembling that will be vexfull.

Sugestion "DON'T DO IT" you may not have a functioning FD at the end of the day(s).

I remember that the excellent Pauls rear could be taken apart.

Have a look at this http://singletrackworld.com/2016/11/get-up-stand-up-step-away-from-the-c...

I don't really want to move the front, the difficulties of getting it back in the right place vex me, as has been discussed on here recently.

FD's often have rivetted parts that would be difficult to dismantle and rebuild unless you have specialist tools.

Why would you want to dismantle a FD anyway?

If it the movement is sticky, try a bit of WD40!

"Is it possible to dismantle a front derailleur?"

Yes, anything put together by man can be taken apart by man. To see exploded views Google "mfg name front deraiileur parts images". Also try inserting model after mfg name. It's worth trying but not knowing what FD you have you may or may not find the image.
