TdF-Bike Transponders

On one of our cafe stops yesterday someone bought up the topic of the transponders fitted to the bikes. The Q that arose was "what happens if you swap bikes off the team car/team member?"

Do th etransponders identify a particular bike to a rider or are they just used to identify when a transponder passes over a pick up line, such as a KOM or the Finish line?

Anyone know?

I can only think that it is just a way to ID when a bike crosses the line and it's up to the judges to link that to a given rider?

The transponders identify the bike, not the rider. As i understand it it's the team's responsibility to make the organisers aware of bike changes on the course. The transponders need to be fitted to the bike, not the rider, as theu're much more accurate than say sportive chips. They're placed a set distance from the front of the bike so that they can be used to adjudicate who's won a sprint, photographic techniques are used in tandem
