01 May Eschborn-Frankfurt « Rund um den Finanzplatz » (Germany)
6-28 May Giro d’Italia (Italy)
14-21 May Amgen Tour of California (United States)
4-11 June Critérium du Dauphiné (France)
10-18 June Tour de Suisse (Switzerland)
1-23 July Tour de France (France)
29 July Clásica Ciclista San Sebastian (Spain)
29 July-4 August Tour de Pologne (Poland)
30 July Prudential RideLondon-Surrey Classic (Great Britain)
7-13 August Eneco Tour (Benelux)
19 August-10 September Vuelta a España (Spain)
20 August Cyclassics Hamburg (Germany)
27 August Bretagne Classic – Ouest-France (France)
08 September Grand Prix Cycliste de Québec (Canada)
10 September Grand Prix Cycliste de Montréal (Canada)
30 September Il Lombardia (Italy)

Some of those didn't feature this year. but since one of the things I want to do is have a UCI WorldTour competition, they'll need to all be in

Others we've had in the game in the past include

  • Other Spring Classics, but for the UCI comp thing to work we would need them to be in a separate comp or run individually
  • Tour of Oman
  • Dubai Tour
  • Tour of Britain
  • Tour de Yorkshire
  • Giro del Trentino
  • Ruta del Sol
  • Volta ao Algarve
  • Criterium International
  • Tour de San Luis
  • World Champs
  • USA Pro Challenge
  • Tour of Beijing
  • Tour Mediterenéen

What should be in/out for 2017? Have your say!

Hi Dave,

I thought you would be aware of the changes and additions to the UCI World Tour next year?
I'd imagine all the new ones should definitely be included...

2017 UCI WorldTour calendar

New events

- 29 January: Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race (Australia)
- 6-10 February: Tour of Qatar (Qatar)
- 23-26 February: Abu Dhabi Tour (United Arab Emirates)
- 25 February: Omloop Het Nieuwsblad (Belgium)
- 4 March: Strade Bianche (Italy)
- 22 March: Dwars Door Vlaanderen / A travers la Flandre (Belgium)
- 18-23 April: Presidential Cycling Tour of Turkey (Turkey)
- 1 May: Eschborn-Frankfurt « Rund um den Finanzplatz » (Germany)
- 14-21 May: Amgen Tour of California (United States)
- 30 July: Prudential RideLondon-Surrey Classic (Great Britain)

By the way, thanks for this comp. I've been playing it for a few years now and have found it keeps my interest up in cycling for the whole year now, rather than just the TDU and grand tours... 1

Tim.

New WT calendar gives us a 12-race spring classics:

25 February Omloop Het Nieuwsblad (Belgium)
04 March Strade Bianche (Italy)
18 March Milano-Sanremo (Italy)
22 March Dwars Door Vlaanderen / A travers la Flandre (Belgium)
24 March Record Bank E3 Harelbeke (Belgium)
26 March Gent-Wevelgem in Flanders Fields (Belgium)
02 April Ronde van Vlaanderen / Tour des Flandres (Belgium)
09 April Paris-Roubaix (France)
16 April Amstel Gold Race (Netherlands)
19 April La Flèche Wallonne (Belgium)
23 April Liège-Bastogne-Liège (Belgium)
01 May Eschborn-Frankfurt « Rund um den Finanzplatz » (Germany)

not convinced of the need for any more

later on in the year there's a bunch of races that may or may not work together as a competition

29 July Clásica Ciclista San Sebastian (Spain)
30 July Prudential RideLondon-Surrey Classic (Great Britain)
20 August Cyclassics Hamburg (Germany)
27 August Bretagne Classic – Ouest-France (France)
08 September Grand Prix Cycliste de Québec (Canada)
10 September Grand Prix Cycliste de Montréal (Canada)
30 September Il Lombardia (Italy)

historically we've tried a number of things with these races. thoughts?

Great Ocean Race will have to be on its own, I think. it's too early to include in the Spring Classics

Spring Classics looks good.  Not sure tha late summer / autumn races work as well, but if we give it a go I would play.

Other races to be maybe considered as part ot the Spring Classics:- Kuurne - Brussels - Kuurne, Le Samyn, Scheldeprijs, and Brabants Pilj. These all attract very high class fields, and I believe all bar Le Samyn have been included in the Spring Classics comp. on here before.

For the Autumn races:- Brussels Cycling Classic, GP de Fourmies, GP de Wallonie, Primus Classic Impanis, Giro dell'Emilia, Milano - Torino, and Paris - Tours.

The more comps the better, as far as I'm concerned. All in, bar Beijing, from Dave's list above. Plus any races normally covered live on Eurosport.

You put the races in the game and I will play them all ......very badly yes

I find that when too many races are on at once, (I'm sure that there were at least 3 running simultaneously on a couple of occasions this year), the amount of time to play becomes excessive, and the enjoyment of both the game and following the race declines.  I also find it very frustrating doing races where there is very little information on the course or riders or the startlist is late or non existent. (St Luis and dare I say the womens racing (which I found interesting but sadly not covered very well) are such races). As a gereral rule, I would say that if world tour teams comprise less than half of the teams, we shouldn't be playing it.

So I think that Dave's original UCI WT list, without the "others" is fine.

Good to see that you are back in the saddle Dave.  Great game, I wouldn't bother playing any other.

Cheers

what i'm thinking currently is that we'll agree that the UCI worldtour races are the core game: they'll all definitely be in, and the leagues will be drawn up based on them. that still leaves the question of purist for classics series, where it doesn't work

others could be included if a) people want them and b) there's a team to run them. i'd agree with tony above that once there's more than one comp running it's increasingly difficult to play them and manage them well.

so if we're going to include other spring classics etc, they'll need to be separate to the WT races

Hi Dave,

As a British run game, I think that the Tour of Britain (and possibly the TDY) should be kept in. I also like the other short tours but appreciate that managing all these races is difficult when they overlap.

Thanks for the fun,

M

Agree with regards T.O.B that must be in for me

Oman and Qatar don't clash with anything and are good early season races so think should stay.

For the rest im not overlly fussed either way, but do like Algarve in there early season and has decent competitive racing, as does Ruta del sol and Trentino. Dubai probs could be in too. Criterium International is just a weekend race and not difficult to run also strongish field. Does overlap with the end of something tho

The rest id say depend on field strength

I think the USA pro and Med no longer exists, or not under that name, same with Bejing? San Luis depends on who is invited can be a bit dodgy with too may south american teams and not enough teams in our game racing.

As TOC is now Worldtour and USAPro has finished I can't think any other North American races need to be included.

Especially in the early season it's good to have one race on the go but not too many.  With this in mind I suggest either Oman OR Algarve, but not both.  Whichever one Eurosport has the rights to probably.  Algarve does at the current time have 12 WT teams named and normally gets enough decent sprinters arriving for a game.   Oman can be a bit dull other than Green Mountain.  I would not do RDS - the "flat" stage sprints are a lottery and movistar normally dominate too much to make it competitive.

Qatar have cancelled their race so would put in something at this time - either tour of dubai or Etoile des besseges.

Giro Del Trentino is now called tour of the Alps and at the same time as the WT Tour of Turkey.  As Turkey is normally boring I would suggest having both games going on.

Also there are several decent one-dayers at the fag end of the season which may be worth including; Milan - Torino, Binche-Chimay Binche, Sparkassen Munsterland Giro, Paris - Tours.  Personally I get a little bored of the game after the Vuelta so appreciate not having anything too hectic at that time of the year.

And in classics season Schilderprijs is a fun joker to put in the competition: Either your picked sprinters score highly or crash

Assume World champs will be in the game as well?

I wasn't expecting the Presidential Tour of Pharmacies Turkey to be in, is it WT now?

Yes it is, for some reason.  The start list isn't the best, but it might be fun to see a few peripheral riders do well.
