Watching Gent-Wevelgum with a child

Possibly unwisely, I'm keen to take my 3.5 year old to Belgium to watch some of Gent-Wevelgum.
He's keen on the idea of a road trip with Dad and seeing bicycles - I haven't broken the news that Bradley Wiggins isn't slated to ride this one. So this leaves the small matter of logistics...

The plan is to arrive the day before and look around Gent with the boy. However, are the teams likely to be around Deinze the day before the race?
Also, is it possible to drive out from Gent to Deinze on the morning of the race, or is it better to stay in Deinze?
And following that, how straightforward is it to drive to one of the towns en route to see the race come through? I have no illusions about the possibility of being able to stand on the Kemmelberg all day with him, but it'd be good to find a cafe, watch it on TV and see it go past.

Any hints gratefully received.
