Handlebar gel pads: any point?

Specifically, with thin bar tape, should I try some gel pads?

I stumped up for the Brooks Cambium bar tape to match the saddle, and it's like the cloth tape of yesteryear! I normally ride with Cinelli and was surprised that thin tape would be acceptable to anyone, any more. Except for retro bikes or hipsters.

As my gloves are gel anyway, I'm unsure if I should just try it, but I hate putting bar tape on, and at this price, I'd be rather annoyed if I snapped it while messing about.

Ok, that's me sold. 1 Last thing I want is squishy handlebars.

I made a point of removing the gel pads under my thin bar tape, I hated the soft feel and found it unnecessary.
In summer I will happily ride for several hours without any tingles or buzzing in my hands-all without gloves too...If it is uncomfortable, just rewrap the bar tape with the gel pads (a 10 min job and no chance of snapping it)

*And it will save a whole 10g* 35
