Canterbury Bike Shops

Hi,

My brother has just moved to Canterbury and decided to get started with cycling! I don't know the area but does anyone have any good bike shop recommendations. He's starting from scratch and will need some advice on bikes and kit and perhaps the opportunity to ride some different bikes.

Thanks

The choice is actually quite small in Canterbury itself. Cycles UK by the bus station cater more for beginners and the chaps that run it are always good for a bit of banter. The only downside is that being part of a chain limits the opportunities for haggling but they will do their best.

Canterbury Cycle Centre (previously Tibbs) in Stour St is now the only independent cycle store left in the town. Run by nice helpful local cycling chaps with an interesting range.

Bike Tart are the trendy young things but are a long way out in the village of Barham so logistics can be tricky.

The next nearest independent is Herberts in Whitstable, not used them but hear good reports.

There is quite a large Bike Hut in Halfords (Vauxhall Road), but I've not used them so cannot say.

One thing worth a mention is that Downland Cycles closed their retail store recently to concentrate on training courses and custom frame/bike building. They were a great owner run store with very good customer service, they will be missed. I wish them all the best in their future cycling endeavours!
