Volta Ciclista a Catalunya - Stage 3

by stumps   March 25, 2014

Now then i wonder how many people will be brave enough to leave Mezgec in their team for this stage ?

He had a combined total of 263 points for high mountains and medium mountains so he can climb but will he be able to climb with the best ?????

it can be (and was on stage 1) but these are proper hills, no? Alta de la Crueta is a 1.2km vertical climb. The final climb isn't that steep, but it is fairly long

Made my 6 transfers, went for the big three GC boys plus a couple of cheaper riders.

I wanted to fit some of the mid-priced riders like Barguil in but couldn't afford it so I've put £2 on him to win at 100/1.

Agreed....today and tomorrow are proper mountain/summit finishes/GC days and no place for the likes of Howard,Mezgec or DuMoulin

I went for...
Contador
Betancur
Rodriguez
LuLu Sanchez
Degand
Hansen
Lemarchand
Gaimon
And had 25 credits left, so took a punt on Fuglsang (Other option was Froome/Quintana and Arredondo instead of Betancur and Fuglsang - wouldn't be surprised if I'm making that transfer tomorrow...)

Given the chance of snow I left picking my team until this morning but it looks like the stage will go ahead in full (it'll just be cold and wet).

Anyway, I went for the three big GC guys and then some cheaper filler, 6 changes means 40 penalty points but hopefully I can leave my team as is for tomorrow, I considered both Quintana and Betancur over Rodriguez but didn't go for either, Quintana because he had a cold at the start of the race and may be taking it easy going into his prep for the Giro (plus traditionally if you're racing the Giro you're not as fit right now as the Tour guys) and Betancur because I suspected either Bardet or Pozzo might be given a shot and I just couldn't be sure Betancur would be the team's go to man.

Anyway:

Froome
Contador
Rodriguez
Paterski
LL Sanchez
Serpa
Alaphilippe
Lemarchand
Chaves

Alaphilippe stays because he won a summit finish in the Tour de l'Avenir last year I think ahead of Mohoric and Adam Yates so might be there or there abouts, more so than any of the other options at that price.

Also, to note, Arredondo had stomach issues yesterday and lost time making Kiserlovski default team leader so he's not in my team. Too much of a risk and could now be on domestique duties.

With the uncertainty over the weather, I haven't committed as much to the mountain stages as I'd initially planned.

Contador
Jrod
Betancur
Degand
LL Sanchez
Van der Sande
Martens
Lemarchand
Vallee

Looks like I should've stuck with Samoilau rather than bringing in Lemarchand, never mind...

1,2,5 on stage and GC, not much else which means a big hit from my 40 penalty points.

Thinking

Just 75 points (115 less 40 penalties) but I managed to move up a place in the overall. Very odd, must have been a low scoring day.
