The iconic Cycling Weekly Box Hill Original is quite a challenge, with awesome hills to get the legs pumping and amazing descents to get the heart racing. Taking in the best of the varied landscape of the Surrey Hills and the North Downs.
There are 3 routes 100 miles, 61 miles and 48 miles. The Epic and Standard routes take in the two famous hills of Leith Hill and Whitedowns and all routes take in the iconic Olympic road race ascent of Box Hill. All 3 factor in the UK’s top 100 Climbs.
EPIC ROUTE Based in the heart of this area of outstanding natural beauty the Epic route flows out of Surrey and into scenic Sussex taking in some of the best of the surrounding countryside ,passing through quiet villages and winding country lanes.
After a circuit of the Low Weald of Sussex the topography changes dramatically....Leith Hill and the fearsome Whitedowns await and after a brief spin to get the heart rate back to normal its time for the ascent of the iconic Zig Zags of Box Hill. Catch a quick glance of the superb view from the top and then it’s head down and on to the finish where rewards, refreshments and massages await all who need them.
STANDARD ROUTE Following the same epic route away from the venue the Standard route provides a good warm up for the heart and legs before splitting close to Ewhurst. Although shorter it is as equally as challenging as it includes the same lung busting hills as the Epic route, including the iconic Zig Zags of Box Hill. Pause for breath at the top, take in the view and then it’s head down and push on to the finish.
SHORT ROUTE
Following the same route as the epic and standard away from the start the short option splits away after the first climb on to the North Downs, followed quickly by the ascent of Crocknorth Hill which gains all the height needed for a cruise across the top of scenic Ranmore before taking in the iconic Zig Zags of Boxhill. Take some time to take in the view from the top and then its head down and push onto the finish.
Although this area is known for its hills, everything is rideable if you have a reasonable level of fitness. A great end of season tester, on very quiet roads, within a stunning area.
