Kaffenback steel framed road bike, with carbon forks and eight speed Alfine internal geared hub. Perfect for fast commuting and zero-maintenance winter miles.
Planet X call the Kaffenback “a Super versatile disc or canti compatible cro-mo frame perfect for commuting, touring and every day use. Newly updated with Swap-Out interchangeable drop-outs so you can run hub gears and single speed in addition to derailleurs, the Kaffenback is a classic Planet X favourite... Originally designed for the classic British cafe and back winter training ride, our steel all rounder will get the miles in any way you want. Hard as nails Maxwall Chromoly steel tubing with cantilever/V brake mounts, disc mounts, clearance for 32c tyres and rack/mudguard mounts mean total versatility too. In fact this formidable ferrous workhorse is truly ready for anything from cyclo cross to cycle to work commuting and everything in between.”
I originally built the bike up as a single speed, based around a new Kaffenback frame in April 2012.
In April 2013, I replaced the rear wheel and upgraded to an eight speed Alfine set-up with new Versa 8 Shifters.
The bike has been used for commuting and has done approximately 1,000 miles since the Alfine conversion. It has always been housed inside both at home and at work and has been very well looked after.
The frame size is Large, which Planet-X recommend for anyone between 5’10” and 6’2”. The basic geometry is as follows:
Head Angle: 73
Head Tube Length: 135mm
Effective Top Tube Length: 555mm
Seat Angle: 73.5
Seat Tube Length (centre to top): 540mm
Chainstay Length: 420mm
Frame: Planet X Kaffenback Swap-Out 2012 (size Large). Includes a spare set of replaceable drop-outs so the frame can be reconfigured with a conventional rear mech.
Forks: Planet X carbon w/ full mudguard mounts
Wheels: Front: DP18 rim built on a Surly hub; Rear: matching DP18 built on a Shimano Alfine 8 speed hub (18 tooth sprocket)
Stem: Race Face
Handlebars: Pro LT (42cm)
Headset: Cane Creek aheadset
Seat Post: On One Twelfty
Saddle: Fizik Arione
Brakes: Kore Kross Race+ cantis with new Kool-Stop salmon pads.
Shifters: Versa 8
Tyres: Continental (GP4000 on the front, Gatorskin on the back – both 23mm, both nearly new)
Mudguards: SKS Chromoplastic
In addition I can throw in a spare rear wheel which is a matching DP18 built on a 135mm spaced Surly flip-flop hub (fixed/single-speed).
Overall the bike is in very good working condition. The paint on the frame is generally sound with no deep scratches/dents/chips or rust. It has been used as a daily commuter though, so is not in showroom condition – there are marks to the top tube where my d-lock has rubbed the paint, for example – but this is entirely down to day to day use. The wheels are true, the brakes work brilliantly with new pads and the Alfine hub is in excellent condition, being only six months old.
Overall this is a perfect year-round commuter and would make a great bike for long winter training miles as the sealed gear hub requires very little maintenance compared to a typical derailleur set up.
