  • USADA boss Travis Tygart says Team Sky zero tolerance policy wrong way to fight doping1 year 47 weeks agoWe seem to have been here

We seem to have been here before Stumpy. Zero tolerance and automatic life bans will only preserve the omerta. The sport will be no cleaner. The policy you suggest would have meant Armstrong got away with it, because others facing a life ban would have had nothing to gain by giving USADA evidence.

  • Guys in black, no lights and on the phone...1 year 47 weeks agoThe most suicidal cyclist

The most suicidal cyclist I've ever seen was on the A14 north of Cambridge in the rush hour. It was twilight, he was wearing head to toe dark grey, no lights or reflectives, and he was clearly texting as he went. The lack of a helmet would have been academic had he been hit by one of the container lorries.

  • USADA boss Travis Tygart says Team Sky zero tolerance policy wrong way to fight doping1 year 47 weeks agoZero tolerance is the only

Zero tolerance is the only way to have a clean sport.

You cant keep giving these riders chances to be clean. It should be that they have to be clean or banned for life, there can be no middle / muddled ground.

If a rider takes meds for an ailment they should be cleared through a Dr approved by the UCI (oh dear might have gone to far there) to say its yes or no.

Once thats done anyone caught with "stuff" in them has to pay the consequences.

I once saw someone pedalling an MTB up the emergency lane of the M23. I was going in the other direction and this was at the M25 flyover, a pretty busy section of the motorway. The chap had a heavy bag across his back and another slung from his handlebars and was just about to cross the slip road leading onto the M23 from the M25.

I hope someone called the cops as I was on my own in the car and couldn't.

I had to get radical 18 months ago ....approaching 50 (too fast)' at least 4 stone over weight..!!
I sought advice from my LBS and invested in a decent hybrid..... and to make sure i kept to my own promise about cycling to work every day I SOLD my car.!!!!
(wifey has got one though....for the really wet days Smile )

Now nearly lost the weight on my 6 miles each way to work....bought bits of kit as I could afford...some cheap but good winter stuff via Aldi etc etc....

I haven't invested in a computer but time myself ( usually see the same people/cars at certain points on route but as I start out at 6am its dark...and country lanes for 4 miles)...I love it.

Might even invest in a 'proper' bike this year !

The advice and enthusiasm from the chaps here on Road.CC though is brilliant Smile

    Thats great, nice one.

  • Inquest told how cyclist died when he was thrown from his bike after hitting rock1 year 48 weeks agoDon't know what happened

Don't know what happened here, but I've seen cyclists rush down twisty, country lane descents (as this lane seems to be) and let the thrill of it overtake them.

Crashing at speed hurts, particularly if you're only wearing lycra. A helmet will NOT save you from injury. Injuries to your limbs and torso can easily be life-changing, even fatal. Even fairly minor bone breakages can ache for the rest of your life.

On descents, get your braking done in plenty of time before a corner, enter it slowly and leave plenty of margin of error so that you don't get caught by surprise mid-corner (mud, gravel, rocks, parked cars, tractors, animals, oncoming cars in middle of the road, etc) when you no longer have the ability to change your speed much. You can always add back speed on corner exit.

Easy into the corners: you'll be nearly as quick, maybe as quick or even quicker, as those who charge into corners and then can't power out of them cause they had to brake mid-corner and their line is all wrong!

You won't get a prize for being a few seconds faster down a country lane hill. You could however get a trip in an ambulance, and a broken hip that'll bother you forever more, or worse.

This may sound a little insensitive, but when there was speculation of foul play in the death of the GCHQ worker, Gareth Williams, who was also a keen cyclist, I thought if they really wanted to assassinate a cyclist, they could run him over - and just get a slap on the wrist.

The motor car rules the world. This is why children go to school hungry, but fuel duty is frozen.

This is such a sad situation. Having come off my bike on two occasions (both relatively minor falls), I know what it feels like to hit the deck. It is a scary situation. These days, I wear a helmet even if I am just traveling a small distance. I am not saying a helmet will save your life in every tumble, but it at least gives you a fighting chance if you do hit your head on the road or gutter. My heart goes out to the rider's family in this very sad situation.

  • Guys in black, no lights and on the phone...1 year 48 weeks agoI don't cycle commute, so

I don't cycle commute, so generally when I see ninja cyclists I'm driving home. It never ceases to amaze me - the last one I saw was not just in black, no lights, on phone, but with hood up, riding on the wrong side of the road, right where an oncoming cyclist would be! In fact I saw two lads, one sat on the handlebars for a lift, do just this (minus phone) and, wobbling along, caused a nicely-lit, high-vis commuter crash into them. Just a low-speed thing that resulted in some bad language, but still bad form.

I tend to resign myself to the sort of response you got and usually don't bother saying anything. When I have done, they have earphones in and probably don't hear me anyway.

Lol @russyparkin - quick thinking there!

Last night actually, I had just gone through a junction near home. Lights everywhere causing a bit of glare, lots of rain and water reflections etc, and I suddenly realised that a woman had done that thing of crossing a road a lane at a time and was right by my right front. I could only see her head. Luckily I was only doing about 12mph. Don't think she realised the danger though.
