• Ban the school run: Experts call for more active journeys to school to combat childhood obesity crisis1 year 24 weeks agoWe're eventually going to

We're eventually going to move towards real time road pricing, with some kind of black box unit in every vehicle.

Short urban journeys at peak times will be priced at a premium whilst long journeys would be much cheaper per mile.

I know that this is currently a pipe dream and neither the infrastructure, political will or a mandate exists for such a scheme. I am, however, talking years in the future when a combination of energy instability, the health of the nation and myriad other factors means that this would be an extremely viable concept.

Britain is hardly forward thinking enough to lead with this so I am sure you will see this type of idea implemented in some European countries or the more progressive states in the US first.

We could also stamp out driving infractions with the same black box.

In the meantime only social pressures would lead to a change in behaviour - this takes time although it is not impossible. Look at social attitudes towards recycling or drink driving for instance.

  • Vulpine Men's Merino Alpine jersey1 year 24 weeks agoHi de hi campers! Uncle Nick,

Hi de hi campers! Uncle Nick, designer of the Alpine.

I very deliberately made the jersey from 100% merino because of its considerable comfort compared to stinky shiny synthetics. The only downer (and also an advantage elsewhere) is it is very stretchy. This informed the design of the rear pockets, which are deliberately less capacious than those of a 'race' jersey. This is not a top to load with 100 miles worth of energy bars, gels, a jacket, tools, wallet, keys, mobile and furry mascot and we say this on the site, as described above.
This is a jersey for super plush riding and sitting in the pub without stinking like a fisherman's chamois after a vindaloo and a little light Paris-Bordeaux.
The durabilty is (hi nemesis @FixieGirl!) very good indeed. The merino is just about as non-bobbling as it gets, and as long as you steer clear of riding through brambles or washing with knives, will last for many years.
Lastly @nbrus, the buttons are there as a simple classic closure and because this is pretty. Thank you for the offer of superbly detailing your arse, but I am married and it presents many potential legal issues that I would like to avoid.
    Happy riding!
    Nick

    Hi Martin,

Thanks for the reply; it's a very nice saddle, although a plain one would suit my Cube far more; and as you said it's the price of a new one with the postage. Anyone riding a Specialized bike would love that saddle.

It's a cycling news website. The winner of the day's Tour stage is about the biggest news in cycling on any given day at the moment. If you don't want to see the cycling news, then don't visit a cycling news website until you've seen the highlights.

That's exactly what I'd expect at this point - one man with Froome to keep him out of trouble whilst Orica Greenedge feel obliged to run the peloton in the yellow jersey. The rest of the team can save their legs for the mountain stages - pretty sure it's intentional!

Interesting though that Sky confirmed he wouldn't be selected nearly 4 weeks before the race, while Garmin left it till a couple of days before to see if Hesjedal was fit.

Of course, Sky thereby missed out on what would have been 4 weeks (plus another 3 in France) of the Wiggo vs Froome soap opera...

  • Sky TDF Team - looks poor!1 year 24 weeks agoIf Sky knew Froome was

If Sky knew Froome was feeling good and had Porte for company just in case, then why should they expend energy with 17 more stages to ride? I didn't see Saxo or BMC lining up on the front in numbers either. It struck me as more of a 'classics' stage where numerical advantage is less important on short climbs like that one. Starting position is far more important and Froome rode well.

There's possibly a bit of bluffing going on with Sky too, they don't have to defend the yellow jersey for 2.5 weeks this time.

  • Sky TDF Team - looks poor!1 year 24 weeks agoThey do need a bit of balance

They do need a bit of balance - your team puts all their top guys in, so who's fresh to lead them in the Vuelta? I think Froome will be happy with guys like Kiryienka and Siutsou, who certainly won't be getting dropped on cat 2s this time next week.
Take your point though, they weren't looking great on Sunday - but we don't know how many of them were carrying knocks from Saturday's crash, and they all looked pretty strong yesterday.
If only Porte and Froome from Sky get over the HC climb on Saturday in the lead group, then I'll start to worry a bit - the Spaniards will be looking to gang up on Sky for sure!
