Did it last year on 30x38 on a heavy bike, definitely possible just a matter of whether you can turn the gear so do some strength training. the switchbacks are the steepest so line choice is really important, snake all the way!

I'm fortunate in being able to keep the best bike inside (with the rest in various outbuildings), but I'm not so solipsistic to think that everyone can or would choose to do so. Were I still back in London, I'd certainly have one of these, with the extra ground anchor arrangement mentioned above. By the time one has attempted to thief-proof a £200 cheap wooden shed, it would have been cheaper & far easier to have bought an Asgard.

  • Is it possible to ride up 30% on a 34x28 compact?1 year 15 weeks agoA 14 stone friend recently

A 14 stone friend recently done it on a 34-30, he has only been cycling seriously for 18 months, so I would say a regular compact no problem.

also, I've been at this 30 years and although I've not done the Hardknott pass myself, a 42 - 28 was considered a girly gear back in the day. Since I've been older/fatter I run a 39 -28, which gets me up almost any road, though nearing 1 in 20, I'm really struggling and away down at 4 mph.

  • Latest fares increase makes London bike commuting even better value1 year 15 weeks agoThat's all very well but not

That's all very well but not everyone can turn up at meetings all sweaty and/ or covered in crap from the road, carrying stuff. A comparison to a travelcard assumes you need to travel around zone 1 and 2 in the day as well..

If it's just the commute, then you'd use an oyster card, which is cheaper.

And anyway, I wouldn't blame anyone for choosing not to cycle in rush hour London -there are far nicer ways to enjoy our hobby!

  • Is it possible to ride up 30% on a 34x28 compact?1 year 15 weeks agoZoncolan's 1000m+ though, and

Zoncolan's 1000m+ though, and he spins a fair bit faster than us mere mortals when he goes uphill, I suspect.
Strava reckons the average for Harknott is 12% with 30% ramps... Zoncolan's 13% for it's ascent with 25% ramps.

Anyway, you'll be fine. You don't like your lungs or your legs anyway, and they'll hate you afterwards. SO it's all ok really.

What is interesting (to me) is Rapha have announced a blue version of the Pro top. Are they planning to switch from Black to Blue for certain races? Can they do that, and would they?

I believe the blue jersey is part of their supporters range only and won't be worn by the team.

The blue jersey is in the Pro Team range, not the Replica or Supporter ranges. What's your source?

If I understand this correctly it's Pro Team spec but won't be worn by the team, just designed for supporters. Not that i totally trust the source mind you!

But if, say, you got ahead of yourself and posted your limit of three times and later in the season their value improved even further, you'd have to go with the highest value (presumably the third) you'd posted.

However, that's probably a bit complicated. Total fantasy score at the end of the season is perhaps the way to go, nice and simple.

especially as rider value will fluctuate due to type of terrain in each race!!

If you're not going to race or be desperate to save a few grammes then MTB pedals/shoes are the way to go.

The roadies may sneer at you but at least you'll have shoes you can walk in and you'll be able to ride your bike in trainers or ordinary shoes if need be.

Also you can get used to being clipped in by wearing 1 trainer and 1 cleated shoe, that way you'll have 1 foot free to put down in an emergency. This tip worked for me.

Real men don't use pods......but a small De Longhi with a milk steamer wand, that way you can buy your coffee in bulk, from anywhere and won't be discarding pods all over the place. Good for 2 cups at once, if you need more, it becomes a massive investment in money and space.

And you get to be a Junior Barista, as the process is exactly the same.
