• Investment pays off for Evans Cycles with sales and profits up in 20131 year 7 weeks agohad an Evans open near me

had an Evans open near me recently and I really can't figure it out. Lots of bikes, little in the way of clothing, odd selection of accessories.

I don't mind ordering a bike for delivery to a store, but clothing, I want to see and feel. If I have to order it I might as well use google and see who is cheap and does returns.

Another thing which hasn't been mentioned I don't think is this silly cycling island thing over the river thames is completely unnecessary and will be of big detriment to the river and it's wildlife in general.

I hope 100% that it never goes ahead.

So what's the best option for me guys? Should I change the Inner Chainring to 38 while keeping the outer 50 or change both chainrings to a 52/36 to optimize gear ratio and shifting?

A quick tap of the set up on Sheldon's gear calculator reveals, with 50/38 chainrings on a 11 speed cassette, 6 combinations duplicated to within 2 inches of another, 4 of which are within half an inch.

Not a great solution in my view, though I do understand the 16 tooth jump - something I pointed out a few posts earlier you may notice.

I run an Alfine 11 hub on a Crosslight pro 6 and it is overkill for commuting, a pain to swap out with a puncture, especially if you run mudguards and very heavy. I know the weight compares well when looked at in terms of a whole groupset but with stop start commuting in London i get to feel the weight at every traffic light etc. This is the ideal replacement and i can see its use spreading amongst commuters especially with disc braked bikes.

  • Investment pays off for Evans Cycles with sales and profits up in 20131 year 7 weeks agoEvans new business

    Evans new business model.

Customer goes into the shop.... " have you got (insert just about anything)

Evans; "im not sure, let me look.....erm, no but I can order it, it will be here in a week"

Customer goes home and orders the same item from CRC and it lands the next day. At Wits End

Ok maybe its a business model that gives them some growth, but I bet they cant sustain it, I would actually be very interested in knowing how many return customers Evans have.

It's getting lots better, though. I've been working on OSM connectivity for a cycling router I've been developing and have made decent progress. Significantly, routing is probably coming to the OSM front-page in a few weeks (including bike routing), which should help more people spot these missing connections and fix them.

@Simon E which wheels did you get in the end? And thank you for the links I shall do some searching around.

Have ridden & raced Grammo carbon 50mm and Shimano RS80s. Weight almost identical, I am much happier with the RS80s. Less affected by sidewinds or turbulence from overtaking traffic, better braking and they don't feel any slower. It's the rider that's preventing the bike from going faster, not the wheels.

If your current wheels are 1600g I doubt you'll find something that blows them away without spending lots of money. If you're not committed to racing I really don't understand why you'd bother with aero wheels when the benefit is so small.

Bear in mind that some lightweight wheels are built with fragile hubs so the rims, where the inertia is, are no lighter than average.

I updated my FSA Compact to a 50/38, (from 50/34) spot on for me.

How is that beneficial, may I ask? You have the same top end but a reduced number of low gears, probably a good few duplicates as well. Seems like the worst of both worlds.

Someone who doesn't anticipate riding up steep hills or is a strong climber may not feel the need for the low gearing with a 34 front ring.

Also, perhaps you haven't noticed others' issues with a typical compact. Lots of people find the jump from 50 to 34 too wide. For me the triple's 39 middle ring is ideal for rolling terrain or steady riding (where I'd be swapping from 50 to 34 and back), while you still have a larger ring for more favourable conditions.

Fitting a 38t or similar inner ring to the existing crankset would save the OP buying a whole new one (and possibly a new BB too). The difference between 50 and 52 teeth is marginal anyway.

I have posted this chart before, it may help this discussion too: triple (50/39/30) vs compact (50/34) with 700x25c tyres.

It's reassuring that there are at least some companies who treat this behaviour with the seriousness that it warrants.

I'm not one for the witch hunts we sometimes see, but this wasn't merely incompetence that could arguably be rectified with training: this was quite clearly done with intent. This was essentially terrorism. Had the dice not rolled lucky double six this should have resulted not in a charge of causing death by dangerous driving but one of manslaughter.

In any case, all credit to Forest of Dean Caravans: this seems absolutely justified and well-advised, and they emerge with their reputation fully intact.

It will be interesting to see how (and whether) the police and CPS respond.

No it wasn't terrorism Rolling On The Floor

All the company is interested in is it's reputation then? Have you carried out a survey then or is this just YOUR opinion? If it were genuinely interested in road safety then it would have had a thorough and robust training programme for it's drivers so this type of driving did not occur. Company has taken path of damage limitation to protect it's business.
