One thing on aesthetics - are those decals on the head-tube removable or are they lacqered over, not too keen on those but otherwise, it's very clean looking.

Agree with the CX v compact chainset issue mentioned earlier too - seems more aimed towards touring/commuting so a compact might make more sense, would a 50t ring bolt straight on? Even a cheap 50/34 ring combo off ebay to switch out as necessary wouldn't be a deal breaker really...

  • Cycling City? Not on our land1 year 22 weeks agoThanks all who've (politely)

Thanks all who've (politely) emailed Bristol CC (Councillors and Officers).

There is more to this than might first appear, starting with Craig Denning / Dream CCs use of Hengrove but yes, extending to use of all the other parks in Bristol for CX (and there are lots - St Georges, Oldbury Ct, Conham Riverside Park, Purdown and Ashton Ct). All are currently in jeopardy. Negotiations continue between the Western League Organisers, the main promoting Club (Severn), BC and the Council.

I understand that part of the problem was that said Parks Manager googled 'cyclo cross' and ended up watching a Belgian vid which showed a crowd of 10,000+ watching a field of 100+ riding a completely chewed up course! (Oh we could wish for the same in Bristol but the reality is a maximum field of the normal 50-ish!).

I'm not riding at the moment as I'm injured but I've ridden Western League CX events for the last 20 years. At one point they nearly died out due to numbers (5 of us!) but like the rest of the UK they've been picking up in recent years and field sizes have been good.

As those who race CX will know, it's one of the most accessible 'fun' but 'serious' (Serious Fun?) forms of cycle-sport.

Let's hope we can resolve the current 'difficulties' in Bristol and get these venues back in the calendar Smile

Make your own similar set of grips using off-cuts of 3.5mm thick saddle leather, an awl to punch holes & tie it all together with either thin shoelaces or sailmakers waxed cotton thread - i've cobbled together enough to do about 3 sets of grips with random bits bought from ebay for about £10... which is just as well as i've made an arse of the first set by not accounting for the thickness of the leather & they've turned out a couple of mm short... but as the leather is so thick it'll stretch pretty well should I ever be arsed to remove them & do this... however, as stated in the article, the gap really does accentuate the stitching pattern... which is all to cock - i'll fix that at some point too... and the edges of the leather need skived as I used an old scalpel & the finish is a bit raggedy...

DM's point was that the attitude towards anti-doping enforcement was so blasé within the peleton that the risk of it being used as evidence was near to nil. I would have been more sceptical if there had been a reasonable amount, or indeed unused syringes/vials.

Regardless, unless you wish to ignore an entire generation of the sport (which is your choice), you can either read:

    1. books by repentant dopers
    2. books by unrepentant dopers - I hear there's a couple of these written in Texas
    3. books by clean riders or those who weren't found out - fine, but you don't get the insight that you can from number 1, and which of those really *were* clean?

It's me again: banging on yet again about '20 is plenty'...Hopefully coming to the roads near you - if you ask for it.

I can't decide on this one. I can see where you're coming from, certainly. I think my concern is in comparing two scenarios:

    1. 30 limit. I'm on the bike, and can reasonably expect that all motor traffic (except tractors etc) will travel faster than me, whether they are adhering to the speed limit or not. Therefore, I'm on the left, and looking for left-hook turns etc by the traffic around me.

    2. 20 limit. I can reasonably expect to travel at a similar pace to the traffic. Being on the left is no longer very safe, because that car that has been sat on my shoulder for the last few hundred metres may turn at any time, and I don't know that he's paying enough attention to have seen me. Therefore, I take primary (you may diasagree with this approach, but this is my current thinking) and just make sure to maintain a good pace. Suddenly, one of the minority speeding idiots comes along and where am I? Right in his path, doing half of his speed.

Also, it's a 20 limit on my (too quiet to use as a predictor of the wider consequences) street and I think there is a risk of false sense of security - the (minority number of) cars which exceed that do so substantially. I think the only benefit of the speed bumps is that the bang as the suspension crashes down on the bump warns the footballing kids and my cats to get out of the way.

Happy to be persuaded otherwise, I just wonder if we're flirting with the law of unintended consequences.

    Hang on, when this first came out they apologised as a company;

    Quote:
We're very sorry for the offence caused by our efforts to create debate around the critical issue of cycling safety.

We're hugely pro-cycling and wanted to do something that would highlight the plight of cyclists on the road, as well as open up a debate about some of the less smart practices a minority of cyclists follow, like jumping red lights.

Again, sorry for the offence caused, it won't happen again.

And again repeatedly on their twitter:

    there I am 60mph, lane 1, M4. Nothing in lane 2 or

mile or so then starts flashing his lights ! I see
he's got his left hand to his head and work out he's
    on the phone ... ggrrrrr

Now ... he's driving a VW, like me, with left hand
clamped to the left side of his head and adamant he's
not going to use lane 2 - a) where does he think I'm
to go, b) how's he flash his lights as the switch is
    on the left !!!

I tried later on and it means reaching THROUGH the
steering wheel with your right hand !
