Carry a bag of potatoes with you at all times.

Every time this happens, follow the car the car until the driver gets out and leaves it unattended. At this point, you swing your spuds into action and ram a starchy nugget into very shyte-pipe you can find on the vehicle (most vehicles of the general type you describe have between two and four exhaust pipes - hence the need for a whole bag of potatoes).

Next time the car is started, it will make some hideous noises followed by one-four loud bangs as the potatoes are ejected at high velocity and transform themselves into instant mash on the vehicle behind.

    Its a wizard wheeze.

No need to preach to me about empathy, i've got more in one cell of my body than most have shown in their lifetime.

Agree with Jasecd. Also being honest I am all-over-the-place when it comes to the issue of appropriate sentences, can't decide if I'm a Guardianista or a Daily Maily. Though I can't shake the feeling that whatever the general stance, motoring violence gets treated more leniently than other forms do.

But we do need to move away from the idea of driving as an essential right.

  • Drunk, speeding, hit and run van driver who killed cyclist sentenced to eight years in jail1 year 7 weeks agoIf I'm honest in these cases

If I'm honest in these cases I find the custodial sentences difficult to assess - what are they really designed to achieve? Punishment, rehabilitation or as a deterrent to others? Generally the families involved understandably want a far longer incarceration but they are far from objective - this is the challenge of the judiciary.

However I cannot ever understand why a lifetime driving ban is not imposed for those who kill with their vehicles. As is constantly stated driving is a privilege, not a right and while taking someones liberty through imprisonment has to be a balanced decision, the taking of their driving licence does not. I do believe that lifetime driving bans would have a very strong deterrent effect and keep proven dangerous drivers from the roads.

So ... Stockton Council are guilty of targeting their advertising at the demographic group who they think are most likely to be interested. How very *dare* they.

Should I get really upset that Fairy Liquid adverts (or similar domestic products) always feature savvy good-looking women for example? Does the exclusion of men in such adverts indicate that men never do the washing up or are too stupid to understand the particular qualities of Proctor & Gamble's products? Or are P&G just targeting their primary demographic?

What about the Ronseal "it does exactly what it says on the tin" adverts? I've never seen a woman feature on any of those. Why not?

This is just utter PC nonsense as far as I'm concerned. All those feigning faux-outrage need to get themselves a life.

Well those adverts are from private companies. So its up to them if they want to limit their market (or make correct judgements about who their customers are). As this is from a local council, so presumably funded by council tax, and is apparently about encouraging physical activity and more cycling for its own sake I don't see that its the same thing.

That's what I have a problem with - if it were an advert made entirely by a private profit-making company running Sportives, with no state involvement, purely as a commercial venture, I don't think it would bother me all that much (though it still would put me off the event, personally).

And I don't think targeting 'those they think are interested' is the same as sending a message to everyone else that this is not for them. This ad, with the whole 'girls going shopping' bit, seems to be more of the latter.

It is a horrible junction. Almost always there are motor vehicles crossing when the lights are red. Snarled up most of the time. Plus a hill EW (because it is where the River Fleet used to be). And v narrow lanes.

Clearly we don't know what happened here, but I've often felt pretty unsafe where it happened, even though I am invariably taking the lane.
