  • insurance & licencing for cyclists?1 year 13 weeks agoTo be legal to drive a car in

To be legal to drive a car in the UK, you only need 3rd party, fire and theft insurance. The cost of this is calculated on the statistical probability that you'll crash into someone/something else and cause a fair bit of damage. In a car, that probability is high enough that everyone needs to pay for insurance. For bikes, the probability that you'll kill someone is less than f*ck all, therefore insurance costs should reflect this.

Confused newbie here, I thought 'the rules' were a joke - they amuse me anyway - but it appears that some folk take them seriously, have I got it wrong?

BTW, is there a national champion jersey in light blue with a tri colour band around the chest? If so I saw a champ near Knutsford this morning.

Personally, I wear baggies and a loose jersey or a t-shirt.

If you like to wear team kit, wear it. If you're comfortable in bin bags, wear them....

I took BC membership for that very reason, I commute through London and was worried about either actually damaging a car or being accused of it even if it wasn't my fault and not having the means to defend myself against an insurance company. The option is there if you want it.

Think you may mean me not Drheaton.

I wasn't questioning your decision, I just didn't think he was suffering. The reason he came 53rd on that stage was that the top 15 or so riders broke away and finished a minute ahead of the peleton, and so he probably didn't feel the need to sprint for 16th or so. It takes up alot of my free time too, but as I finish work at either 8 or 10 its been easy just to come in and watch the ToC

    Sagan!

Meersman fourth probably would not have been worth the penalty points although I would have been better leaving out Matthews.

Sorry to confuse you with Dr Heaton I should have gone back and checked the thread.

Good luck with the Giro, still hoping for a top twenty finish there myself.

  • Mont Ventoux next weekend1 year 13 weeks agoRight then, first ride done

Right then, first ride done today! I did the Route De MV, approx 21km. Took me 2 hours 10 mins, which considering I'm a track sprinter by trade I'm quite impressed with!

My bike is a Lemond Aple Dhuez with a 52/39 chainset and 12-27 cassette. Honestly, I found it to be a bit overgeared, didnt get me to a reasonable cadence on the steep bits by any means so I was having to stand and stomp way too much. I would definetly recommend a compact chainset and a 28t cog would have been nice too. I met a few cyclists on the way up and they were mostly riding triples if not compacts, so this would seem the way to go. One bloke had stuck his mountain bike gears on there and he was practically strolling up there, he could have been twirling a cane he made it look that easy!

Needless to stay the ride was stunning, views were incredible on the way up and down for the most part (summit was cloud covered when I was up there and for the first 7km of the descent) but I had a sunny ride up to the final 3km. One point - it's bloody cold at the top! I had a base layer, arm warmers and packable rain jacket which got added on as I went up. Going up was fine but coming back down I was very cold, though I did set off at 1430, not sure what the temps would be like on a slightly better day setting off in the morning. Weather was reasonable, but always expect cloud and wind/rain at the top. I was lucky to just get rain and cloud! Either way it's not warm up there, I personally will be much better prepared next time...tomorrow then when I try the other route up!

Hope this is of any use to anyone looking to do it for a first time.

The Troll door is that way >>>>

Insurance is an option for many that have high end bikes.

    License fee? Wise up.

As for a license fee being used on road maintenance, there is NO specific taxation that goes on the roads. So in a way, we ALL pay for the roads already.

Also, do you see bike's damaging road surfaces through normal use? NO, its the larger vehicle's that do this.
