  • Evans cycles - the MacDonalds of bicycles?1 year 10 weeks agoI should say; Evans used to

I should say; Evans used to be better, and more competitive. I suspect expansion, the mini-boom UK cycling is experiencing and them taking the eye off the customer-service ball are all part of a problem they could still fix. They have the locations.

I have pretty good luck with Wiggle - quick free shipping and no problems with items on the site but not in stock (which at least a few other have problems with). I did have an issue with a set of bibs from Wiggle that came with a seam unsewn for an inch or so. They wanted a picture of the defect (done), then had a form for me to complete with the message

"Please send it back to us using the returns system found on our website and we will refund your returns carriage if found to be faulty. If the product is out of warranty or not considered a manufacturers defect we may only be able offer a repair service which may incur a fixing charge." - While I realise that is boilerplate, I expected a bit more after sending them a photo. Why bother?

I just gave in and sewed the things up myself. Compare to Northumberland with the new tyre in the post the next day - just return the defective one in the included postage-paid pack.

Chain Reaction is also fast - never had to return anything so can't say about that. The problem I have with CRC is that their listings are so skimpy you are sometimes not really sure what they are offering.

G will probably be captain - he's been road captain a couple of times for Sky inc this year's Dauphine. Unless Bradders is up for it....

As for PK he's still wiped out from the Tour apparently. DNF Colorado, and they had to pull him from the ToB squad.

    Around £10 each:
Schwalbe Blizzard Sport. Quite light, I have a folding pair on for over 12 months that have been surprisingly good.

Alternatives I have heard good things about include Vittoria Rubino rigid (wire bead) and Zaffiro, but I've not tried them.

    Under £20:
    Vittoria Rubino Pro III
    Bontrager Race Lite Hardcase
    Michelin Lithion II

    Above £20:
Schwalbe Durano (but not variants e.g. Skid, Plus)
    Michelin Pro 4 Endurance
    Continental GP 4 Season

There are others but these 3 are consistently top rated allround/all-year tyres.

My thoughts too. It wasn't so long ago that we struggled to scrape a handful of riders who were up to the job, and enough UCI points to qualify them in the first place.

  • Road Bike Tyres - Help1 year 10 weeks agoI found Michelins more

I found Michelins more vulnerable to cuts than Vittoria, however I was on the pro 3 SC, not the newer pro 4, or the endurance model. Amazing rolling resistance tho.

I just replaced my rear Vittoria after 1400 miles, front still looks pretty good after same mileage. I don't think that's horrendous, but depends on your definition I suppose.

As LSW says, budget tyres are false economy, all of these mentioned are good tyres for what they do, wear rate and performance varies according to purpose

Although coming to the end of his career he can still cut it with the young un's but he seems a pragmatic sort of fella and probably understands why he has been left out.

  • Canadian study suggests road cyclists should wear body armour as well as helmets1 year 10 weeks agoInitially I thought that this

Initially I thought that this study was just making the same rookie mistake that most safety studies carried out by doctors make - drawing conclusions only from the consequences of injury without looking into the real world risk of receiving that injury in the first place. Then I spotted this, quoted in the second section...

    Quote:
Absolute injury event rates per kilometer for street cycling range from 26 to 68 times higher than those for motor vehicle travel.

...which changed my conclusion completely. I've decided that the only way for me to stay safe in the future is to never ride my bike in Canada.

No it isn't! US flag (when worn on sleeves as in that pic) is always worn with the stars & stripes upper forward corner. Stems from the days when flags were carried into battle, streaming out behind the flagpole, that's the direction the flag would take when seen from the right.

  • Road Bike Tyres - Help1 year 10 weeks agoI'm running both the Vittoria

I'm running both the Vittoria Open Corsa and GP4000S on a couple of bikes. The Vittorias ride nicely, but wear rate is horrific. Also appear vulnerable to cuts (although I haven't had a puncture yet). I wouldn't advocate them for all rides. As @ilovemytinbred says the GP4000S are a good all-rounders, and unlike him I do feel their wear rate is very acceptable. Given the time of year you might be well advised to think about 25mm Gatorskins though.

(I'm not sure what you mean by 'budget', but searching for a cheap tyre is a false economy. Simply, they'll ruin every ride in one way or another. I think all the tyres named above give great value for money - which is perhaps a more important measure of their worth).
