I'll be fine with this after they introduce compulsory helmets for motorists, both passengers and drivers, which would save a great many lives.
Pros and cons of bicycle registration/licensing here:
http://ipayroadtax.com/licensed-to-cycle/licensed-to-cycle/
Got to admit, it's overwhelmingly cons.
Posing Elitism.
What the woman in the photo needs to do is put some air in that back tyre and get the lad at the back to put some effort in.
Compulsory orange clothing- for that stylish Guantanamo bay look.
Perhaps all cars should only be painted orange or yellow.
That way we could all see the cars much easier...
+ Daytime running laps (DTRL) are becoming compulsory/ regulatory soon (2012? for all new cars) - so the roads will be filled with volvo-eque vehicles
ppf. I am glad they are going to prosecute him! He has no excuse. As i wrote on a previous posting, He could have taken a side turning and used a different route, not brain surgery! I wish all the injured cyclist's a speedy recovery. p.s. I fully agree with Mariachi's comment!
Something tells me not to rule that out
I am sure that this sign will be strictly observed by everyone who cycles considerately already.
They can piss off. I'm not being told what to wear by a petrolhead special-pleading lobby group.
And do they seriously think there's going to be an actual law which says "it shall be an offence for any child who is not wearing an Approved Fluo-reflective Garment to leave his or her residence between the hours of 17:00 and 09:00" ?
Because if they do they are completely and utterly insane.
I bet the average age of the membership of GEM is about 80+ and they all wear hats in the car
I enjoy driving and I also enjoy cycling (I enjoy wearing hats but not in the car
) but I want all road users to respect each other and GEM members to remember that if your on a bike, motorbike or walking you don't have a massive tin box protecting you so take more care when we are about. Also if your eyesight is that poor then don't drive a car it's against the law.
Blame the victim again.
timlennon calls it right in my opinion. A driver not seeing a pedestrian is the driver's error, it is not the pedestrian's responsibility.
I'm sure most cyclists would say drivers should have their eyes restested every 5 years (and maybe their distance/hazard perception).
I'd be happy to take a basic driving test every 10 years. If that's too much to ask a brief theory test wouldn't go amiss. A fair number of drivers appear to have forgotten the contents of the Highway Code.
Helmet mythbusting appears to be in order too - they are not built to withstand being hit by a 4x4.
Yes, not just cyclists are wearing reflective gear these days. I have seen one person with a light on both her and her dog. They even sell reflective clothing for dogs. Cars are so dominant in our culture these days that everything else needs to be lit up like a Christmas tree or risk getting knocked over. No sign of this changing either especially as a national tabloid's big campaign is entirely car centric. You just can't imagine them having a similar campaign about walking, bicycles or public transport.
Thanks, I appreciate the response.
"9 out 10 motorists said it wasn't their responsibility to drive according to the road conditions" is what it sounds like. Whereas if you asked the question with the opposite bias, most motorists would say "I don't think some poeple drive with enough care" ...
what an idiot! The trouble with these politicians is that they think the best thing to do is create more and more laws. Perhaps he should be looking at laws he could abolish rather than new ones.
What the..??!! That is so ridiculous it shouldn't deserve a response other than, "are you on crack?"
dont over inflate them... i live in sussex and the roads are crap, and full of flints, ever since i dropped the psi by about 15 on each tyre all has been good. I run 100ish on the back and 90ish on the front... and for the winter i have been using Bontrager All Weather Race Lights 23mm, they have been bomb proof. During the summer months i run Conti GP4000s and they're great.
However, tyres are tricky, and one mans bomb proof is another mans rizler paper, so its a suck it and see job most the time...
A fair question would be exactly what it offers to rate a 7 on value?
Do the pockets come stuffed with caviar? Does is stream HD movies while you're stopped at lights?
thanks for that, they do indeed look like 3T's, esp. after just seeing them pics. of Mr Kelly and the Vitus with 3T bars, i'm off to raid the piggy bank.
£150 for a tank top?!!
But it's not made-to-measure, organic or fairtrade so why the hefty premium? I know it's a bit of a stuck record but goodness me that's a lot of money.
You can buy three Altura gilets for that much, and don't ask me about my perfectly adequate 'softshell' Aldi gilet...
I suppose it might look OK with a bow tie, if that's your cup of Earl Grey.
I'd go for a fatter tyre. Much, much better on poor surfaces. Continental Grand Prix 4 Season 700x28, which actually measure 25 mm wide, have been good to me. No punctures in flinty Cambridgeshire.
You could swap for something smoother for TTs, if you really wanted to.
I don't think there's anything particularly unusual about the Arione's rails, but I notice that Topeak do an F22 fixer for "racing style" saddles.
I have a Fizik Saddle Pak which clips directly my Arione, but their "medium" is not as big as your Topeak.
He probably snapped it off whist mowing down cyclists!
That's excellent and my feeling is that more (good) cyclists are likely to take notice of such a sign than the negative wording of a 'get off yer bike' style sign.
More roads signs should take the more considerate and polite wording.
