A few years ago I was member of a small team of cyclists riding from Oxford to Paris to raise money for an Oxford hospice that had cared for a friend in his final days. We wrote to a number of local celebrities asking them to lend their support - either vocal or financial - and as Clarkson is an Oxfordshire resident we sent him a letter with the attached photograph, in the hope that it would appeal to his sense of humour and suggesting he join us (bringing Richard Hammond along for the ride too). We never heard a squeak back and no pennies were forthcoming! Still makes me laugh though, whenever I look at it, but obviously it didn't have the same effect on the man himself!

Nice route. IIRC it's pretty lumpy everywhere except a short section Tregaron (you can't tell it's not flat by how wiggly the red line is on the Garmin map). Not too many main roads, and the Elan Valley/Cwmystwyth road from Rhayader is particularly lovely.

Distance wise it's a bit more than half a Bryan Chapman. Rapha made a video about this 600km+ audax.

I don't know where you got that from. Lake Vyrnwy is higher up in the Berwyns while Llyn Tegid is beside Bala in the bottom of the Dee valley. The Hirnant and Cynllwyd passes between them are on my list of routes to ride this summer.

  • Police take no action against moped rider caught on camera kicking out at cyclist's bike1 year 4 weeks agoI have posted above on what I

I have posted above on what I think should have happened (DD Charge ) and more realistically what could have been done by the Met without even breaking sweat. (Careless Driving FPN 3 points and £100) So I am all for going after the guy.

The difference though was that he kicked out toward the cyclist. Now up to the point that he actually connects it's not an RTC and it's not an assault. He may claim that he was making the gesture not trying to kick the wheel. They are different charges.

In the case of a cop with a camera the difference would be this. Kick towards a cop and it would be a public order offence, threatening behaviour. Actually kick the cop and it's assault.

    Sentencing wise

Fear or threat of low level immediate unlawful violence
such as push, shove or spit = Low to medium level community order +Band B fine

so it's a threat therefore minimum of that lot.

Assaulting a police officer is a summary offence. The starting point is a custodial sentence 6 - 26 weeks.

I chose the metallic to add that bit of glamour that only the Giro can provide and obviously the pink represents the leaders jersey the 'maglia rosa'. It's not all designed from the heart though, I've upgraded the wheels and groupset to reflect the Giro's arduous climbs, the toughest of any Grand Tour. My design has meaning, it's a tribute to the Giro d'Italia.

I'm almost the same size as you, and was having a tough time deciding between the 54 & 56 cm Cannondale Synapse. I gave both a good test ride, because I'm lucky enough to have a lovely LBS, and I felt a bit happier on the 54. I felt like a bit more nimble on it than the 56, which is what swung it for me.

I could have lived with 56 very happily, but the 54 was a bit better. Of course, Cannondale and BMC sizing differences could totally change that.

  • Miss out on RideLondon place? Ride for Tommy's and raise money for charity1 year 4 weeks agoAs I understand it the way

As I understand it the way this works for the London marathon is that the organizers charge the charities a large amount for each guaranteed place (~£400), so it's easy to see that for the charity to actually raise any money they are going to ask for a pretty big fundraising target from each runner. It isn't the charity's costs that are high but the price they pay to the organizer.

Personally I find it impossible to ask people for money to do something I would choose to do anyway (like a 100mi sportive). I think 'sponsorship' has to involve unusual effort/pain/suffering, otherwise it's just a donation. I might as well say to people "I'll do a bunch of different bike rides this year, please donate to XYZ". So I'll happily sponsor an overweight non-runner in the office to do a 5k, but I wouldn't sponsor myself for any kind of bike ride. A lot of people who sign up for 100mi sportives are doing one for the first time, then it's OK by me.
