• If it's good enough for Vin Cox...1 year 3 weeks agoThis is a lovely looking

This is a lovely looking cycle, I have the boardman CX which I have to say is a lovely do anything piece of kit. I looked at the genesis as a possible but couldn't get a ride on one to compare.

Have you ridden the board man if so how did it compare? I find myself thinking that I should sell the mtn bike and the boardman and get myself something like this, I do enjoy off roading though so would fit wider tyres. But the ability to have a rack for touring is a must.

Lastly how much did the build cost you if you don't mind me asking ?

  • On the boards with Boardman: riding the new TK Pro track bike1 year 3 weeks agoI enjoyed the article and it

I enjoyed the article and it was really good in putting across what the track session felt like, a good reminder of how hard it can be etc. but ....

It's a track bike so it would be nice to know what happens when you really chuck it around, up and down the bankings and how it handles in the cut and thrust that most track racing consists of.

Maybe when Dave is more fully recovered he could have another go or maybe there would be lots of volunteers (as well as me) to take one on the boards and give it a bit af a hammering. In fact wouldn't it be great to do a group test of ready to race, yet reasonably priced, track bikes in the £400 to £800 price bracket?

Just picked up a 2nd hand in good nick Boardman Comp, the amount of 2nd hand Halfords bikes where people have been sold bikes too big for them is unreal, have a look on eBay its quite funny.

  • Just In: Trek Domane 2.01 year 3 weeks agoHaving built up several bikes

Having built up several bikes with both, I prefer Tiagra over 105. Cable routing on 105 brifters is like Swiss watch repair. Tiagra is a snap to set up. I like the range of the triple, but might upgrade the RD (as little as £25) for the 5701 medium cage. Another nice thing (IMHO) about the Tiagra exposed shift cables is they look better on a "classic" build. And I swear they shift as well or better than 105s. Shame about the dorky gear indicators.

I have never once seen anyone use cycle scheme to start cycle commuting. From my experience the people using it either already commute by bike or want a nice cheap bike to put in the shed for the weekend.

Still find it ironic that Asda are sponsoring it, as quite a few of there stores that I have been to (but not used because I couldn't lock the bike up) in the past do not have ANY cycle parking facilities.

    Sigh.

Who needs cyclist haters, Jeremy Clarkson and the Daily Mail when we've got our very own bike snobs - who presumably already ride bikes.

Everyone might wish to cast their mind back to the launch in 2010 of London's Barclays bike hire scheme. The usual suspects - and no doubt many on here - were predicting carnage on the streets as cycling newcomers and those from abroad cycled under the wheels of buses, taxis and other motor vehicles.

News flash - it never happened.

More cyclists can only be a good thing. I agree with the less snobbery, more be helpful approach. We need to encourage new cyclists by showing them other cyclists are helpful and courteous and commuting on a bike is the way forward. We have all been noobs, weaving our way along the road, unaware of how to position ourselves, too busy looking at what we're doing rather than what everybody else is doing even if that was when we were kids.

I do find myself cringing in horror at some of the close calls starting at this time of year though, I've even been run into a couple of times myself by other cyclists. This isn't just noobs but also summer cyclists being rusty in city traffic, I wish they'd just take there time for the first few weeks if they're on a bike for the first time, or the first time in 5 months. Other road traffic (vans, taxis and lorries) does seem to take a couple of weeks to adjust to the increase in cyclists too. It's my least favourite time of year to cycle.

As with everything it seems there's a minority of people with bad manners and an elevated sense of self importance spoiling the fun for most by shoaling, red light jumping, etc. I just try to be even more diligent and courteous to all other road users (including pedestrians)

  • Cyclist sues Halfords for £1 million, claims steerer tube "failure" led to severe facial injuries1 year 3 weeks agoMy Boardman CX that was built

My Boardman CX that was built by Halfords had almost everything on it done incorrectly, to the point that the crank fell off while I was riding. Luckily, I was going slowly at the time, but it could easily have been a terrible crash.

The poor training and often a bad attitude make Halfords a dangerous place to buy a bike, and I hope that Joseph Love can get things back on track in his life after his crash.

  • Shimano BR-R785 road hydraulic discs1 year 3 weeks agoI am a bit meh about discs on

I am a bit meh about discs on road bikes, I accept it will happen, but if they don't do hydro's for non Di2/EPS (I won't touch SRAM with a bargepole so don't go there) I am really not interested at all. For background I have XTR discs on the MTB so know what they can offer.

IMO going to cable discs you loose so many of the benefits of discs, to the point personally i'd just stay on rim brakes.

Big problem I can see is going to be cost. no road shifters are particularly cheap, decent MTB disc brakes aren't particularly cheap either, add the two together and you potentially have very expensive brake levers just waiting to be crashed.

  • Poor roads, bad driving & theft deter Reading cyclists, council admits before rolling out excuses for inaction1 year 3 weeks agoThank God it's my last week

Thank God it's my last week of commuting into Reading. My office is on Vastern Road and the new East-bound section is a joke - the bus/cycle lane is the right lane! Westbound, the cycle path (pavement) ends abruptly saying "rejoin carriageway" which is the 3 lanes and approaches one of the most dangerous roundabouts it has been my displeasure to use (hint: don't use it).
