  • Boris bike use down 20 percent1 year 2 weeks agoBoris does get a lot of stick

Boris does get a lot of stick on here and other forums and I agree there are plenty of reasons for it.

However, I am ever mindful of the likely alternatives to Boris who genuinely would drive cycling into the ground so as not to alienate the ever precious motoring fraternity.

Can you imagine for example that someone like former transport minister Mike Penning (utterley useless and plainly hostile to anything not spewing fumes) was ever London mayor?

We'd practically see open season announced on anyone who had the gall to walk or cycle anywhere with motoring liberties being extended to absurd levels with resultant 'accident' rates soaring in no time, none of those of course being the motorists fault.

I feel we actually need to be mindful of the bigger picture and although my understanding of the Boris bike scheme is limited I presume there is good reason for the rise in price?

Cynically of course it could be a step to kill the scheme and start the decline back towards absolute motoring dependency.

Well done to the girl on the bike!

I also had a rare mishap recently - front wheel slid out at low speed when crossing a small central ridge in an uneven but dry cycle path. Moral of the story: that's what you get for riding 25c slick summer tyres in November! There is something to be said for selecting a wide grippy tyre for the winter months and sacrificing some speed.

  • Rapha to end Rapha-Condor-JLT sponsorship after next year1 year 2 weeks agoIt says a lot about the value

It says a lot about the value to a sponsor that both Sharp and Rapha spent some money, and then later found even more for a team higher up the scale. After all they must be considering the outlay and return like any marketing expenditure.

If anything it's indicative of good value, even sponsoring a wing mirror in F1 would cost more than a cycling team for a year!

The questions is which firm will work this out and now sponsor the team?

LA does differ from all the other riders mentioned above. USADA, WADA and now the UCI get that. I thought most cycling fans did to. I recommend the writings of David Walsh , or, more recently, the book wheelmen. This is written by and from the perspective of people who understand where the money went.

IMO, it is true that the american market and american methods of sports promotion generated new wealth in cycling. IMO that was/is a good thing, though others may have a different view. It also seems likely that cycling will survive the discredit brought upon it by LAs misdeeds.

But none of that can excuse the misuse of power and lies by LA during his period of dominance.

Should team sky and Chris Froome come to dominate in the same way as LA and his teams, it will be interesting to compare their respective legacies.

  • Cambridge bike shop Howes Cycles to close after 173 years1 year 2 weeks agoBen Haywards - I vividly

Ben Haywards - I vividly remember walking past there in 1988 and seeing Cannondale bikes for the first time. These fat tubed brightly coloured beasts looked amazing, exotic, almost otherworldly. I had never seen bikes like it.

I don't have such memories of Howes but am saddened at its closure and like many here surprised that the business wasn't given the chance to continue. If a bike shop in post-Wiggo 2013 in Cambridge can't be sold on then something is seriously wrong.

My mate was a junior partner in a well established traditional IBS and when the owner retired and sold up, he continued it, with a smaller bit of the original premises, the same brands stocked, the same customer base and pretty much the same ethos. Despite competition he employs 2 others full time and makes a reasonable living and has a good life.

I wish the owners of Howes well and hope another person takes over as a bike shop in the premises.

  • British rider Liz Dimmock aims to break round-the-world cycling record1 year 2 weeks agoDimmock's challenge is a

Dimmock's challenge is a lesson in dire PR - it's amazing what a good PR company can do - not pedalled a stroke in angry and already calling herself a round-the-world cyclist. Reality is - records are hard to break, a good PR company would know that you never publicise a record until it's in the bag. This whole effort smacks of an amateur cyclists trying to rebrand herself as a "professional adventurer" without actually having achieved anything prior to this one event and trying to convince sponsors to part with their cash in order for her to drive two cars and a few support staff around the world. No wonder she is struggling to get on the road - achieved nothing significant to-date and rather than giving back to sponsors, she seems to drop one when a better one comes along. Condor built a steel touring bike she raved about, now suddenly shes raving about Bianchi. This is no way to treat sponsors and those holding the purse strings can sniff out a fraud a mile away.
