  • Help - carbon road bike.50 weeks 2 days agoHi-mod is stiffer so you can

Hi-mod is stiffer so you can use less (and therefore lighter frame) to achieve the same stiffness. Some frames claiming to be hi-mod aren't hi-mod throughout and for the mere mortal it will be difficult to tell the minute differences between frames (other than poisition and distinctly differing design purposes like aero Vs sportive).

£2k is a lot to spend on a first road bike. Some very good alloy framed bikes (cannondale CAAD, Giant TCR SL alloy if you can find one, Kinesis, etc etc) with 105 for around £1000 at the moment. Having seen some of the weights of low end carbon frames, its not necessarily better than alloy.

Get one that fits and the one you like the look of.

Four 3.0-ers in there! Couldn't quite fit Tejay in there (who I think will go well, just not as well as Chava, Kwia & Froome); I'll be looking at at least one penalty tomorrow.

I've gone for an all-out TT team today, but no Kwiatkowski could cost me. Couldn't squeeze Tejay in, went for Froome as I think he could surprise some people today and wanted to be slightly different. Purists could be terrible but I totally lost my overall purist position with a disastrous Giro (Dan Martin, J-Rod) so I need something special to get back up there!

I noticed this on another site, reference the D Day celebrations

"Sir Bradley Wiggins, the first Briton to win the Tour de France, also attended the flower market close to Notre Dame Cathedral, in the centre of the city.

He attended with a team of charity cyclists who are travelling from Brussels to London, via Paris, to raise money for Help for Heroes.

I began reading this post, and though 'finally, someone who got it', but then I continued and read more vitriolic diatribe from the uninformed.

Have you watched the BBC interview with Brad? If not, may I suggest you do, sometimes reading the transcript doesn't describe context, when you do watch it, you'll see that Brad appeared genuine.

These guys are professional sportsman, and I'm sure both Brad and Chris are sick of all the talk. You think two professional footballers who play premier league, and also in the national time are gonna be best mates?

If you knew Brad, you'd realise something that most of us who do, already know, he speaks his mind, he's honest, something rare, and displayed at the 2012 TDF when asked about all the doping speculation, the press room actually applauded his comments.
Froome is no different to Kevin Pieterson, he doesn't integrate, he's not loved by his adopted country, and has done nothing to change that.
A top level sportsperson doesn't have to be liked, and they all have arrogant streaks, something that you need to succeed, and after all, it's a job to these guys, and they need to earn money, cycling is a short career, and 2 years earning a couple of million, means little if you stop earning at the age 35.

Yes I saw the interview , however that is irrelevant.

The simple fact of the matter is wiggo has removed himself from this yrs tdf because he doesn't want to ride for froome in a super dom role .....

DB hasn't finalised the squad it's that simple .

I'm sure within a year it will all come out the wiggo simply refused to accept the team plan and because of that made a personal choice not to ride

  • Criterium du Dauphine50 weeks 2 days agoOn the race in general, I'm

On the race in general, I'm probably not alone in thinking that it's really a two-horse race between Froome and Contador, with Nibali, Spilak TJVG and perhaps Bardet as outside picks.

But what if... Kwiatkowski has a surprisingly good showing, say second overall or wins a coupleof stages, say the TT and maybe the final summit finish? Gives OPQS a bit of a headache, doesn't it? Or will they still be going all-guns-blazing for Cav and leaving Kwia to pick up scraps and maybe challenge for the maillot blanc?

I just think Kwiatkowski is an awesome cyclist, with the potential to be a true great... his attack vs Sagan in the Strade Bianchi was phenomenal, but he can TT, he can climb... Day Dreaming Drooling Love Struck

  • Do Driving Instructors Have to Take a Cycle Proficiency?50 weeks 2 days agoI'm glad you took the time to

I'm glad you took the time to write that.

I've wondered before whether driving school should start to use simulators at some point, so specific scenarios can be staged for learners. Learning to overtake, and drive safely around filtering traffic is an important skill to acquire. Unfortunately, an instructor can't summon bikes and motorbikes to appear for him during a lesson.

There's no reason that simulators would be an expensive technology to develop and standardise. In fact, it would probably save money if it reduces a few of the knocks, scrapes and worn clutches that I'm sure all instructor cars must suffer.

Dave, God knows I'm annoying, and I'm wasting my time, Big Grin but wouldn't it be nice to see that type of info on a page without having to go click on his profile after the stage? Couldn't we have a page like the riders page where you could list or check the most popular riders per stage? Something like this below?...

In the first example I show only the Top 9 riders for each stage are 'checked' so you could see the 9 most popular riders for each stage of the race... Big Grin

Big Grin Note the amazing color coding of each stage:

BLUE - Time Trials and Medium Mountain Stages
    RED - High Mountains
    GREEN - Sprint Stages

Thinking You could also change the checkmarks for numbers. No. 1 would be the most Popular rider for that stage, No. 2 the 2nd, etc... You can see that in the second example... Alternatively you could show % of teams that had that rider or number (!) of teams that slected that rider for that stage...

. Of course, making the columns sortable by stage would be supremely cool, too (!) Big Grin And having the most popular riders for the whole competition, well, I would die (!) if that ever happened... ('Do it Dave, do it'! Smile 'Just to get rid of enrique!') That (!) would take the cake! Yummy! Smile

    timtak wrote:
Carbon forks and rear triangle bend to give the effect of suspension....

Not a good (or accurate) description of the effect of carbon on a road bike. Carbon can flex slightly (as can aluminium if designed to do so) but carbon does not transmit vibration in the same way as steel or aluminium so you tend to feel the road vibration less. Because you go on to say that if you are thin then you dont need a bike, I take it your post is made very much tongue in cheek and none of it is meant to be taken seriously.

  • Help - carbon road bike.50 weeks 3 days agoCarbon forks and rear

Carbon forks and rear triangle bend to give the effect of suspension, like riding a mountain bike except as light as an aluminium road bike. If you are very thin then the suspension may not be needed but if you are that thin you probably don't need a bike or, more likely you already have one. Cheap carbon for the win.
