Doesn't matter how visible if driver doesn't look or care.

Are the police stopping dark/dull coloured cars and giving out free stick on reflectors?

LED lights will be fairly poor. Most I see (which I assume are the cheaper end) are not bright enough from a distance. If the person riding the bike is silly/reckless enough to ride without lights, when chance is there of them batteries when they die?

I see a fair number of people on bikes without lights, apart from the one guy on an unlit off road path (just after dusk so may have been just running late), most are either children (and where is the parental responsibility as the ones I see have no lights not just rebelliously turning them off) or scrotes who don't give a flying.

But the key point is that they can be seen, certainly in urban areas if drivers actually bother to look.

  • Rapha Winter Jersey2 hours 38 min agoI have owned one of these

I have owned one of these since 2010 (OK, previous model, of course, though it has not changed fundamentally) and it is absolutely fab-u-lous - crashed in it at the back end of August this year (hit just over 0 degrees that day and I hit a pothole and trashed my helmet into the bargain) and the free repair service provided my pride and joy with mega replacement patches as a badge of honour. Repair service was ABSOLUTELY free - freepost shipping to Rapha and free delivery to my door. You really cannot argue with that, plus the jersey washes brilliantly and the venting is superb when you need it.

  • Total disillusionment with Garmin products and support4 hours 19 min agoI just wanted to post a quick

I just wanted to post a quick update here.

After searching for things to try on broken resistive screens I found some suggestions that sticking it in the freezer might solve the problem.

I put it in a sandwich bag with the air pushed out and left it in overnight. The next day I tried the calibration again and the screen was more responsive in that area. This time the wizard actually completed and it's working now.

A bit embarrassed about how angry I'd got but I thought I'd swallow my pride and post this in case anyone else has a similar issue. I'm not sure if it was the freezing that did the job or if the contact point was too small and I'd just missed it every time before (I was using an old-school stylus previously to see if I could accurately find where it thought I should be pressing) but it works now so that's that.

  • protective clothing10 hours 23 min agoI used to play American

I used to play American football and have occasionally thought that something like hip and tail pads would be useful in case of a cycling crash. The design of these things has moved on a great deal since I played, fortunately, and are now slim enough that they might be acceptable. Most of these garments seem to include thigh pads, but I suppose one can always just cut those off and sew a new hem. I spotted this one that has just the hip and tail pads, though.

Obviously, however, they're designed for a completely different type of impact. How well anything like that would work in a road crash scenario, I'm not sure. I suspect the best protection might come from something like ice hockey shorts, but they'd be way too bulky to be practical. I think they also make padded shorts for paintballing (called slide shorts), which might be worth investigating. There's clearly a gap in the market for road cycling armour.

  • Drunk driver who killed charity cyclist Christian Smith jailed for five years11 hours 49 min agoReoffending rates are high

Reoffending rates are high due to a number of reasons inluding unemployment, high cost of living, the limited availability of low cost housing hence the terminology of sofa surfing, poor education standards and sentencing guidelines being to soft. The rehabilitation of offenders only works if there is something for them to return to in the first place.

First hand experience is the best experience imho mate.

Your turn for a low baller ! regardless of whether my wife, son, daughter or whoever was responsible they have to live with their actions and nothing could or would ever change that. Yes i would be devastated as would you if it was your partner.

  • Lance Armstrong loves adhering to a sporting ‘code of honour’ – but only if it’s golf11 hours 58 min agoI suspect a young LA

I suspect a young LA recovering from cancer watching what he had fought for dreamt of and not to mention his lively hood slip away being turned down by teams when wanting to return, while seeing let's face it large numbers of riders with less talent than him doping and keeping there jobs. I think many people would be tempted to join the majority of pros and use drugs? Add to that the culture of cycling at the time and I feel really petered by him being portrayed as a monster. I suspect he was simply being human and as all humans do he made bad decisions. The problem is that the better he performed the bigger the lie became and it got out of control.

He was wrong! 100% I accept that but was he any worse than the other riders doing the same? May be he was because he won more. But if the majority used drugs does that mean that he had more talent than the other dopers in the peloton. I just think it is wrong that so many past dopers are worshiped as heros but he is seen as evil? Is it because he over came illness? Is it because he gave millions hope? My sister was dieing from lukemia during his peak and he gave her so much hope it was invaluable in helping her fight the illness as long as she could. Drugged or not he did some good to with live strong and inspired many ill people.
I'm not saying he was a saint far from it but some of the hatred I read is IMO is not ok unless all dopers are handed out the same treatment

  • protective clothing12 hours 24 min agoI understand almost exactly

I understand almost exactly were you are coming from. I have been on crutchers the past 4 weeks after a spill on a iron man hole cover. Amazingly I got on my bike for a few minutes but then couldn't walk. X-ray show a displaced pelvis and cartridge damage but no broken bones. The last time I had a nasty spill was on boards over 12 years ago.

It has made me very aware of how vulnerable we are in Lycra with no protection, well maybe a helmet depending on you point of view. It has caused a lot of reflection, I'm lucky enough to be employed by the NHS so will get paid but I have still lost a few bob in unsocial and extra hours.

I thought about body armour having worn it during my motorbike days. I don't think it would really help too much as it would need to be comfortable and also stay in place during an impact.

I think the real decision for me was do I accept the risk of riding a bike fast (ish) or do I look for a safer pass time. Ok I would imagine playing snooker is less risk but most physical sports carry risk, my knees aren't good enough for running and beside I have loved riding my bike since my Raliegh Dart as a kid!
Is it less dangerous that sitting on the settee? I'm not sure, would I miss riding God yes the past few weeks have been awful, apart from the pain I miss my bike. Just eager to sit on my turbo for a light spin, it's still some time off.
IMO if there was body armour which could limit injury with out reducing performance I would think the pro teams would use it to protect there investments?
For me I will just have to overcome the undoubted fear I will experience while getting back on the bike.
Good luck with the fracture, am I right in presuming there was no NOF damage/replacement needed? If you do find protective gear that works please share the info but more than anything I hope you keep on riding my friend Smile
