• Mike Ashley's Sports Direct in market for £100m Evans Cycles sale?2 hours 55 min ago@jimmyd I was a workshop

    @jimmyd

I was a workshop manager for 2 large Evans stores in London; non-management staff (i.e. sales assistants and mechanics) were on minimum wage (although could make a reasonable bonus if the store traded well), and hours were not guaranteed

Every autumn we'd start shedding staff as hours were cut to the minimum, staff would leave (try surviving in London on 14 hours a week), we'd be understaffed during the winter, and then have to recruit in the Spring, meaning a constant churn of staff, and lack of experienced staff.

Evans did try recruiting "cashiers" but soon realized that even a basic sales assistant in the bike industry needs to have some knowledge of bikes, to sell just the right inner tube.

Eventually the permanent staff would get fed up, find a slightly better paid job in a LBS, or depart the bike industry.

Bike shops in London have a real problem with being able to recruit and retain competent staff, especially mechanics - bike shops are competing with a wide range of employers in different sectors, 'loving your job' sounds nice but when its minimum wage and uncertain hours, that love only goes so far.

To be fair to Evans, its not unique to them, most chain retailers (including Cycle Surgery, and high street i.e. not bike industry ) operate this way.

My guess is that Wiggle, if they managed to take over, would hire a few people to ride bikes around dropping bags of Haribo - hence fulfilling your dream of 'presents' on the high street Cool .

Wiggle - if you do want to make a bid and you do win through then howsabout me being able to order online and you drop of my order at my nearest Wiggle store and I call in and pick it up just like I can with Amazons lockers at my local co-op on my evening commute home.

Polygraph lie detectors are complete bollocks. He might as well say a gypsie read his palm and it proved he's not lying, about as meaningful.

The only thing lie detectors are good for is as an interrogation prop, to help elicit confessions from people who don't know lie detectors are on a par with homoeopathy, science wise.

Someone else mentioned that! If the new, shorter stem isn't enough, I will try that, too. Smile

What a shame... I'd replace the frame as soon as possible.

Often, there are opportunities to 'shorten' the effective reach by changing the angle of the bars and the placement of the levers on those bars. I see loads of pictures where people complaining of being too stretched and they have their bars set up as extreme as is feasibly possible.

To shorten, rotate the bars down until the bottom of the drop is almost parallel to the ground, then move the levers further up the bars. This can sometimes make a big difference, but depends on your bars and current position.

That's interesting - I will have a look on youtube, to see if there's a video. Smile

Depends on the club, but many now offer slower group rides, ours does ~30 miles at a pace of 13-14mph with a "nobody left behind" policy.

These rides only work if the organiser hasn't got an ego though. Some people can't bear to see people go quicker than them, even if they've previously agreed to it.
This is where I think its better to be in a bigger club with more experience. It may be slightly more daunting to join a club that has a lot of members and history though I suppose.

I don't think armadillos are the answer, certainly not if they're the tiny plastic things. They crack the first time a car drives over them.

"Make no mistake – armadillos are popular because they’re cheap, not because they’re effective."

Why not do the job properly with a clearly visible segregated kerb, like they do in the Netherlands, Copenhagen etc...

Well if it happens, and Mike Ashley can wield his massive bulk buying powers, it could be very good news, stuff will be cheaper. If he try's to turn it into another Chav emporium, and the quality suffers in favour of pure quantity, maybe not so good.

I'm not 100% on this but surely the TUPE regulations will come into play on this, as this is a sale.

If Evans was being brought from administrators the TUPE rules don't apply.

  • Council to conduct tests on "death trap" Brighton cycle lane3 hours 52 min agoI'd seen these on TV last

I'd seen these on TV last year and not realised how fragile they were. Clearly it's the design and not the concept that's at fault though. Why they don't make them out of the same stuff as sleeping policemen I don't know.

Perhaps rows of small bollards may help instead, at least lumps of concrete are a little more durable and harder for workmen to get wrong.

If it were up to me it would be a row of spikes, similarly I think traffic lights should have retractable spikes that only drop when the lights turn green.

    Not exactly.
A brief search on the F&T site seems to show 8 *stores* inc Ambleside, Betws y Coed, Matlock, Stratford, Bournemouth, and my neck of the woods, Guildford - quite a small outdoor-only store but I've used them a few times in recent years. I dont know how the fortunes of F&T are related or wrt timescale, , but bear in mind Millets/Blacks have had their own problems which resulted in a lot of store closures.

  • Edinburgh cyclists sue council for tramline injuries4 hours 54 min agoUntil I moved to Aberdeen

Until I moved to Aberdeen last week for work I had been cycling over the offending piece of track every day whatever the weather and I have never had an issue. I have seen a few people hit the deck but these are people who I seem like they don't really have much idea on hoe to cycle in the city on roads, positioning themselves incorrectly on road at junctions and hugging the kerb. Yes there is an issue with the markings of the cycle lane but I think in Edinburgh you need to accept that the makings aren't enough and it is better to just cycle in the lanes.

I have actually seen a motorcycle go down on the tracks at the same location when he was stationary in traffic and then his rear wheel spun out on the tracks. The bike going down made a bit of a crunch!

I think that court action is a step to far though and I think if the cyclist went on a cycling provision course they would be a lot safe and would learn how to tackle the street furniture.

It's daft, isn't it. The doping question is always on the table, because, well, it kind of has to be. But to expect sane responses from the riders during press conferences - what do they expect? Some of the riders will try to cheat, and some will get away with it. There's nothing much the clean riders can do about it. Unless there's any proof, they can't point at suspected riders because theres the not insignificant issue of libel. And the rather more significant issue of sponsors and the money that allows the sport to run.
Cav's response, looking beyond the abrasive retort, was spot on. Is it clean? No way to be 100% sure, but it's as clean as the clean riders can make it. What more are they supposed to do?
