New Forest sportive organiser responds to threatened crackdown

Hampshire County Council is threatening to regulate cycling events in the New Forest if organisers do not agree to a code of conduct to reduce the claimed impact of  rides and sportives in the area.

County council chairman Ken Thornber said: “Competitive cycling is changing the character of the Forest for the worse. If the organisers don’t agree to enforce a code of conduct it falls to us – the local highway authority – to take action to regulate these events.

Becky James & team pursuit squad make Sportswoman of the Year shortlist

Double world track champion Becky James and Great Britain’s world championship-winning team pursuit squad have made the shortlist for the Sunday Times and Sky Sports Sportswomen of the Year Awards.

James, who comes from Abergavenny, emerged as the successor to multiple world and Olympic champion Victoria Pendleton in March this year when she won the sprint and keirin at the UCI Track World Cycling Championships in Minsk, Belarus.

WADA to vote next week on doubling doping bans to 4 years

A doubling of the standard ban for first-time doping offences from two to four years is one of the measures that will be voted on next week at the World Conference on Doping in Sport to be held by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Trois Etapes announces Giro edition for third year

Cosaveli, organisers of the Trois Etapes TdF, have announced a new event taking in classic passes of the Giro d'Italia. The Trois Etapes Giro will take place from 6-9 June 2014 and will hit four iconic summits: Passo Pordoi, Passo Giau, Passo San Pellegrino and Passo Fedaia.

The Trois Etapes TdF has raised $4.5 million in just two years for 11 charitable partners.

Much of the race series’ UK exposure is thanks to broadcasters Eurosport and Channel 4, but this year Cosaveli are looking to double their exposure themselves by offering two events.

Morvélo CityCross this weekend + video

This Saturday, 9 November, sees the second Morvélo CityCross take place at Piece Hall in Halifax, Yorkshire, and it looks to us like being a whole lot of fun.

The organisers say, “With cobbles, corridors, kerbs, grass, concrete, sand, and several manmade obstacles, it's taking CityCross back to its roots.”

Route announced and entries open for 2014 MITIE London Revolution

The 2014 route for the largest multi-day cycling event in the UK, the MITIE London Revolution, has been announced. The two day, 185 mile sportive will take place on the weekend of May 17-18.

Videos: Three films showcase Yorkshire's Tour de France starring role

With a shade over eight months to go until the 2014 Tour de France starts, excitement is building in Yorkshire over hosting the Grand Départ and here are a trio of short films showcasing the region’s spectacular scenery as well as some of the roads that will feature.

The first, called A Grand Day Out: The Movie, comes from the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority.

It follows a small group of cyclists as they explore the beautiful surroundings and tackle some of the same climbs as the peloton will during the Tour.

Gardeners urged to turn Yorkshire yellow for the Tour de France

Residents of Yorkshire are being urged to “turn the white rose county yellow for one amazing weekend” to celebrate the Grand Départ of the Tour de France.

The first two stages of the 101st edition of the race, the full route of which will be unveiled in Paris on Wednesday, take place in Yorkshire.

Stage 1 runs from Leeds to Harrogate on Saturday 5 July, while the following day’s Stage 2 takes the peloton from York to Sheffield.
