New wheels - in a quandary

Have some Fulcrum Racing 5s (which I like a lot) on my BMC, but have been hankering after an upgrade for a while (more from a desire perspective, rather than need).

There are some pretty good deals on at the moment. Struggling with deciding on approach:

1) Do I upgrade one step and get some Fulcrum Racing 3s (which I would then feel happy to use for daily training)?

2) Do I go for a big upgrade, pay twice as much and get some Fulcrum Racing Zeros (but then would I be daft to use them for daily training, rather than saving for racing/events)?

3) Do I get equivalent Mavic/other?

First TT tomorrow - any advice?

I'm having a crack at a 10 mile TT tomorrow evening, put some 2nd hand aero bars on my road bike and done some riding and tweaking to the setup and saddle on the way to and from work to try and get a comfortable position.

So apart from just going out and riding as fast as possible for the distance, any words of wisdom or advice?
I was going to aim for a sub 30 ride as my first goal and hopefully surprise myself.

New to racing

As part of my mid-life crisis I am thinking of entering some cycle races. Only ever done one timetrial before (on my road bike) so a complete novice.

I believe I can enter only 4th Cat races and there seem to be some around on British cycling.

I can average 20-21mph on my road bike on a slightly rolling 20 mile course by myself ... am I going to stay with the peloton or is my pace too poor?

Any advice?

How do you block off the big ring?

Well, the question's in the title.

How can you stop the big ring from being shifted to, I really need to know.

If you use the derailleur limiters, will you have to retension the cables?

Thanks Forumers.

126kg to Cat 4 racer! What does Cat 4 mean?

This is my first blog as I start winter training for the 2012 season.  In 2008 I was 126kg and struggling to ride 3.5 miles home from work, it’s now the end of 2011 and I’m planning my first season of racing, it’s funny how things have changed.

Mexico City

Just got here in Mexico City and was surprised to find that a major road is closed every weekend in the centre to allow cyclists to charge up and down. There's a race on just now, quite odd to get up all jetlagged and find a peloton so near at hand. It makes me wish I'd brought my kit. I'll hire a mountainbike this afternoon and take advantage of the closed roads.

Alternative exercise to benefit my cycling

I am a road cyclist and am riding with a club with the aim of racing in the not to distant future. Right not my focus is improving my fitness, endurance and speed.
My wife is an experienced horse rider and I have the opportunity to learn to ride horses. Can anyone tell me if this would offer any benefit to my cycling performance. Having never experienced horse riding I may be wrong, but imagine that leg strength, core strength, endurance and balance are crucial and this should translate nicely into cycling?

Selle San Marco Concor Light Racing Team Saddle - £40

Hey,

I've had this saddle since March last year, I bought two at the same time, one for my summer bike, one for my winter bike, this was fitted on the winter bike so has only been used indoors, from November '10 - March '11. Probably did about 50 hours riding. As it's never been outside it's in great condition, no tears/scratches, in fact you can barely even see that it's been used.

They go for about £55 online so I'm looking for £40 posted for this. Payment via paypal or can be cash on collection from Bath/Weston-super-Mare.

Lead out trains

It occurred to me that every man and his dog (no offence Cadel) tries to get on Cavendish's rear wheel in the 'final'. Why don't HTC put a man behind Cav to keep them off? Aside from the obvious (one less man to pull on the front), I can't see a downside. He would obviously have to hold the wheel well and have pointy elbows. Big Bert Grabsch in his early season shape (think Ulrich off season) would be ideal!
