The Lezyne Classic Puncture Repair Kit has proved hard to fault. No matter how good your tyres, maintenance or riding style, sooner or later, we all succumb to the dreaded hiss. Pisssssspharp! If there's no ruinous gash needing a new tube, this is a  decent patch kit that will get you home.

Meqix patch kit brings a little designer chic to the humble puncture repair outfit. The time honoured plastic tin rattling with chalk, marker, patches, solvent and plastic levers has been replaced with an ultra sleek polycarbonate carry case containing a stainless steel buffer, two lozenge shaped levers and eight patches. However, while form certainly doesn't preside over function, a tenner is my limit for this particular saddlebag staple.

Knog’s penchant for outlandish names continues, although dubbing a puncture repair kit “porno patches” suggests they’re intended for repairing inflatable sex toys. While I’m more leave than take when it comes to the graphics, styling and name, credit where it’s due: the adhesive patches work better than most. However, aesthetics appear to take precedence-not what’s needed nursing a flat down a dark lane in the dead of night.

From its gaudy green box to its double scalloped, feather edged patches, the Rema Tip Top TT02 touring kit is more an institution than an accessory. You're spoilt for choice these days if you're looking to mend a tube but you'll go a long way before you find better quality tools for the job than these.

Inside the box you'll find some decent quality emery paper, a tube of vulcanising solution and seven patches: six round ones and a long one for big holes. Oh, and a bit of tube to mend a Woods valve, if you have any of them knocking about.

Lezyne clearly believes small is beautiful but I’m afraid the smart kit might be a case of form over function. It’s a compact roadside patch kit, smaller than a book of stamps and comprising of an emergency tyre boot, six glueless patches and a small stainless steel tube scuffer.
