When not to wear a helmet

I have always found it odd when wandering around Sainsbury's picking up my high carb, low fat groceries seeing people shopping still wearing there helmet worn to cycle to the supermarket. Now, I sometimes shop on a bike but I always carry tde helmet under my harm or put in the basket out of the way. Bright yellow tops as well look out of place under the bright lights, I would take mine off and put in a bag or something.

Commuter Diaries - cyclists love coffee

Well I have seen everything now! I was cycling to work this morning, overtaking a line of stationary traffic on the outside; when one of the drivers thankfully opened their window and threw out the dregs of their coffee.

I had to laugh, when the coffee splattered my front wheel.

One Less Car I say!

Thanks

Flo K

Ps I did see some Roe and Monk Jack Deer this morning, not quick enough with the camera I’m afraid.

Mark your way

This idea was by Pepin Gelardi, a Finalist in pedal power design competition.

THE ROAD: A bicyclist on the road often feels that they are under assault by passing vehicles. Particularly in cities where bicyclists seem rare, motor vehicles aggressively dominate the road, discouraging potential bicyclists from joining in.

THE CONTRAIL: Contrail is a small bright bike accessory that allows bicyclists to color in their own space on the road. It’s like playing with sidewalk chalk, but faster.

Schwag Grab: Genesis T shirt

Hot on the heels of the iceBike mug comes this fetching brown Genesis T shirt with an 'Altitude' motif. It's size M so no fat lads or children Smile

Usual rules apply: post a comment saying you want it, and you're in the draw. I'll even throw in some GearUp badges with slightly risqué messages on them.

Other rules: only posts from registered users go in the draw. The draw'll be made friday before we go home. the judges' etc etc

Thanks to Madison for the tee...

Commuter Diaries - weekly musings

The correct number of bikes.
N + 1

N = the current number of bikes you have.

leave a pump at work.

I currently have an SKS retro track pump on the go which I am testing, review to follow. It occurred to me when I was unlocking my bike at work one day, that I should leave the pump there for emergencies and fellow cyclist to use.

Cyclists are a helpful bunch; if you see someone with a flat or mechanical don't you stop and help?

Protection.

Drenched Commuter Diaries

What a difference a day makes? Tonight’s commute felt like whaling around the cape with horrendous winds and driving rain. I was drenched by a van who ploughed through an enormous puddle. I had to laugh despite smelling of stagnant water.

I rode an MTB today fitted with semi-slicks which was a change, slower but relaxed. I use this bike as my touring and pub / shopper as it is complete with guards, rack and panniers. I was carrying more luggage today and this bike is a real work horse.

So return of the hi-vis jacket and waterproofs.

Winter Commuting advice from Ghost Dog

There is something to be learned from a rainstorm.

When meeting with a sudden shower, you try not to get wet and run quickly along the road. But doing such things as passing under the eaves of houses, you still get wet.

When you are resolved from the beginning, you will not be perplexed, though you still get the same soaking.

This understanding extends to all things.

A Hero Returns

About 25 years ago I was just "getting into" proper cycling; a bike was slowly morphing from a toy, through merely a mode of transport and finally into a machine to have fun on and explore the world. I was learning to mend and replace bike parts, just starting to enter the murky world of "specialist clothing" and hanging around bike shops being an annoying teenager.

Sickest item on ebay… probably

This may not be the best bike for sale on ebay, but it is certainly the best bike description, in fact it's probably the best product descrption bar none. Worth hitting the link and reading the "Ask the seller" questions and answers too… Sadly though, this item has ended - isn't that just always the way.

Extra bike security

We've just had a few test samples in from Urban Hunter, which came with this sticker. You can't buy it on their website (or at least I can't find it) but it tickled me and I thought I'd share.
